The application of unsteady incompressible flow phenomenon over the bluff bodies has received the attention of many researchers due to the rich and complex physics underpinning these flows, and thus requiring special attention in their modelling and numerical simulations. The wake that forms at the leeside of the bluff body is of particular interest. Reynolds number and geometry are in turn two prominent parameters that govern the formation and subsequent behaviour of this wake. This paper revie
In this study, various types of industry corrosion addition practices are investigated with regard to the ultimate strength performance of bulk carriers. Five types of corrosion additions, namely previously applied structural design rule, CSR (common structural rule), harmonised CSR, time-dependent corrosion wastage model, and new suggestion of corrosion addition by Union of Greece Shipowners, are considered. In the previous study, investigation on the ultimate strength performance of oil tanker
Several marine structures are subjected to critical loads resulting in their fatigue failure. Among these structures, the riser is an essential component that transports the hydrocarbons and fluids from the platform to the subsea well and vice versa. Risers are subjected to vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) caused by current, leading to fatigue damage (Lekkala et al., 2022a; 2022b). Therefore, developing a simplified and valid approach to estimate fatigue behaviour and damage is necessary. Though
A reliable and cost-effective technique for the development of corrosion damage model is introduced to predict nonlinear time-dependent corrosion wastage of steel structures. A detailed explanation on how to propose a generalised mathematical formulation of the corrosion model is investigated in this paper (Part I), and verification and application of the developed method are covered in the following paper (Part II) by adopting corrosion data of a ship’s ballast tank structure. In this study, pr
In the ship and offshore structure design, age-related problems such as corrosion damage, local denting, and fatigue damage are important factors to be considered in building a reliable structure as they have a significant influence on the residual structural capacity. In shipping, corrosion addition methods are widely adopted in structural design to prevent structural capacity degradation. The present study focuses on the historical trend of corrosion addition rules for ship structural design a
Numerous oil tanker losses have been reported and one of the possible causes of such casualties is caused by the structural failure of aging ship hulls in rough weather. In aging ships, corrosion and fatigue cracks are the two most important factors affecting structural safety and integrity. This research is about effect on hull girder ultimate strength behavior of double hull oil tanker according to corrosion after Part I: stiffened panel. Based on corrosion data of Part I (time-dependent corro
Age-related problems especially corrosion and fatigue are normally suffered by weatherworn ships and aging offshore structures. The effect of corrosion is one of the important factors in the Common Structural Rule (CSR) guideline of the ship design based on a 20 or 25 years design life. The aim of this research is the clarification of the corrosion effect on ultimate strength of stiffened panels on various types of double hull oil tankers. In the case of ships, corrosion is a phenomenon caused b
