This Account describes a new strategy for the preparation of label-free sensor systems based on the fluorogenic properties of the conjugated polymer, polydiacetylene (PDA). PDA has been extensively investigated as a sensor matrix, owing to a brilliant blue-to-red color transition that takes place in response to environmental perturbations. It has been known for some time that "blue-phase" PDAs are nonfluorescent while their "red-phase" counterparts fluoresce. For the most part, however, the sign
To investigate the role of hydrogen-bonding on colorimetric transition of polydiacetylene supramolecules, novel diacetylene derivatives allowing various hydrogen-bonding states were synthesized by coupling carboxy-substituted (ortho-, meta-, and para-) anilide groups with a typical single-chain diacetylene lipid. One with a terminal carboxyl group at the meta position provided the resulting supramolecular Langmuir-Schaefer films with enhanced hydrogen-bonding, and hence resulted in unprecedented

Organic template-directed mineralization of calcite crystals has been probed in situ by external reflection−absorption FTIR spectroscopy in an effort to understand the dynamics of the organic−inorganic interface during crystal growth. The main focus is to elucidate structural changes that may occur in the organic template as crystal growth progresses. The nucleation face types of calcite were visually identified according to known crystal morphologies and by the corresponding carbonate stretchin
Gold (Au) colloids are becoming ubiquitous across biomedical engineering, solar energy conversion, and nano-optics. Such universality has originated from the exotic plasmonic effect of Au colloids (i.e., localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPRs)) in conjunction with the versatile access to their synthetic routes. Herein, we introduce a previously undiscovered usage of Au colloids for advancing cryoprotectants with significant ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI). Oligopeptides inspired by th
Abstract In order to develop more user‐viable formats for polydiacetylene (PDA) biosensors, it is necessary to control the biochemical and physical properties of the PDA matrix. In this study, we prepare polydiacetylene liposomes from controlled mixtures of 10,12‐pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA) and PCDA–MI, a PCDA derivative with a maleimide headgroup. Both the chemical and physical properties of the liposome are easily manipulated by controlling the molar ratio of PCDA to PCDA–MI during liposome p
Dissociation of protons from fatty acid Langmuir monolayers causes competitive adsorption of other counterions and partial charge neutralization. A new equilibrium model incorporating surface electrochemical and thermodynamic features is presented. The Stern–Gouy–Chapman equations are used, along with a modified Langmuir isotherm in which ion activities in the mixed surface monolayer instead of concentrations are employed. A two-dimensional lattice model with Flory–Huggins interaction parameters
The general practice of photodynamic therapy (PDT) comprises repeated multiple sessions, where photosensitizers are repeatedly administered prior to each operation of light irradiation. To address potential problems arising from the total overdose of photosensitizer by such repeated injections, we here introduce an internalizing RGD peptide (iRGD) derivative (Ppa-iRGDC-BK01) that self-aggregates into an injectable single-component supramolecular depot. Ppa-iRGDC-BK01 is designed as an <i>in situ
