The composition of betalain, red or yellow pigments, and betaine (trimethylglycine or glycinebetaine) of nine beetroot ( Beta vulgaris L.) cultivars produced in the greenhouse or field was studied. Inhibition of HepG2 cell proliferation by betanin and betaine was also tested. Four predominant betalains, two betacyanins (betanin and isobetanin) and two betaxanthins (vulgaxanthin I and miraxanthin V), were isolated and quantified. Betanin and vulgaxanthin I were the major compounds in red and yell
Hardy kiwifruits (Actinidia arguta) were treated with 20 μl/l 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) for 16 h at 10 °C and subsequently stored at 1 ± 0.5 °C. Anticancer properties of the fruit extracts were tested against five different human cancer cells. The hardy kiwifruits, without 1-MCP treatment, showed increases in both respiration and ethylene production rates during fruit storage. The 1-MCP treatment remarkably inhibited fruit ripening by reducing respiration and ethylene production. Fruits with
We applied exogenous ethylene to 'Jecy green' kiwifruit to elucidate the differences in fruit quality and metabolite profiling between naturally ripe (NR) and ethylene-induced ripe (ER) kiwifruit. Kiwifruit were exposed to ethylene (200μL/L) for 12h at 20°C and maintained for 9days at 20°C. Two metabolites of ascorbic acid and arabinose significantly decreased during kiwifruit ripening regardless of the ripening method. The concentrations of sucrose, myo-inositol, citric acid, and malic acid in
Abstract In the present study, long‐term changes in the first bloom date of shrub and tree species in Seoul (126.56°E, 37.34°N), Korea were examined using historical observational data for the period 1922–2004 (83 years). The study focused on two shrub species, golden‐bell ( Forsythia koreana ) and azalea ( Rhododendron mucronulatum ), and three tree species, cherry ( Prunus yedoensis ), peach ( Prunus persica ), and American locust ( Robinia pseudoacacia ). The annual‐mean temperature has incre
Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) spears are rich in bioactive compounds such as protodioscin, a saponin, and rutin, a flavonoid. Protodioscin and rutin are routinely quantified separately, and an approach permitting simultaneous measurement would significantly improve speed of analysis. We have optimized an extraction procedure and modified a method of high-performance liquid chromatography by coupling to an ultraviolet detector to simultaneously analyze protodioscin and rutin in asparagus e
The contents of eight phytohormones and the expression levels of genes encoding enzymes related to abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and deactivation/degradation and transcription factors (TFs) related to fruit ripening were studied in the non-climacteric strawberry fruit (Fragaria × ananassa Duch., cv. 'Seolhyang') at six developmental stages. The hormones tested were ABA, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid 4 (GA4), jasmonic acid (JA), methyljasmonate (MJ), jasmonoyl isoleuc
Chilling injury in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruit during cold storage and market distribution results in quality loss. In the present study, seed browning, a major chilling injury symptom, was observed in pepper fruit stored at 2 °C, but not at 13 °C. To alleviate this symptom, we applied vapour treatments of 50 μM methyl jasmonate (MeJA) or 250 μM methyl salicylate (MeSA), or a combination of both, and investigated the effect of treatments on seed browning in pepper fruit during cold storage
This study was conducted to characterize shortday onions of 3 pungency levels with regard to the composition of flavor related compounds. A total of 9 onion breeding lines/cultivars were selected, per each of low, medium, and high pungency level, with pyruvic acid contents of 1.9 to 2.8, 4.8 to 5.4, and 7.2 to 8.3 micromoles/mL, respectively. The contents of flavor precursors (S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide [1-PeCSO] and S-methyl-L-cysteine-sulfoxide [MCSO]), free amino acids, free sugars, so
(E)-2-Hexenal is a reactive electrophile species released by green plants upon herbivory or pathogenic infection and induces various defense responses. In this study, (E)-2-hexenal was used as a natural alternative to artificial fumigants to prevent postharvest pathogenic infection of the ‘Haegeum’ kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis). Integrated transcriptome-metabolome analyses were performed to investigate its effect on the induction of plant defense responses. When kiwifruit was fumigated with 10
The hydrolysis of glucosinolates (GSLs) by myrosinase yields varieties of degradation products including isothiocyanates (ITCs). This process is controlled by the glucosinolate-myrosinase (G-M) system. The major ITCs in radish roots are raphasatin and sulforaphene (SFE), and the levels of these compounds decrease during storage after harvest. We investigated the G-M system to understand the mechanism behind the decrease in the ITCs in radish roots. Six varieties of radish roots were stored for 8
This study was performed to purify and quantify quercetin glycosides (QG) and aglycone (free) quercetin (Q) in 6 selected onion cultivars and to compare analytical approaches based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and spectrophotometry for the quantification of total quercetin (TQ) concentrations. Individual mono- and di-glycoside Q compounds were purified using a semipreparative HPLC and identified by comparing spectral data and by confirming corresponding peaks of QG and Q afte
Summary Measuring the total phenolic content in wine is important in estimating the taste and health benefits of wine. We developed an automatic Folin–Ciocalteu (F‐C) method to reduce processing times (3 min), human errors and waste volume as compared it to the manual method. The gallic acid standard responded linearly up to 5000 μg mL −1 , and the wine dilution series responded linearly between four‐ and sixteenfold dilutions. Anthocyanins showed slower reaction rate compared with wine, gallic
Postharvest storability is an important trait for breeding strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.). We evaluated the postharvest fruit quality of five strawberry cultivars ('Durihyang', 'Kingsberry', 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang', and 'Sunnyberry') and identified differences in their fruit ripening during the transition from the big-green to fully-red stage between two cultivars with the highest ('Sunnyberry') and lowest ('Kingsberry') storability, using comparative transcriptome and -metabolome analys
