Silver nanoparticles were produced by laser ablation of a metal silver plate in an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate, C12H25OSO3Na. The absorption spectrum of the silver nanoparticles is found to be essentially the same as that of silver nanoparticles chemically prepared in a solution. The size distribution of the nanoparticles measured by an electron microscope shifts to a smaller size with increase in the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate and with a decrease in the irradiation l
Gold nanoparticles were produced by laser ablation of a gold metal plate in an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The absorption spectrum of the gold nanoparticles was essentially same as that of gold nanoparticles chemically prepared in a solution. The size distribution of the nanoparticles thus produced was measured by an electron microscope and was found to shift to a smaller size with an increase in surfactant concentration. This behavior is explained in terms of the dynamic formati
Silver nanoparticles were produced by laser ablation of a metal silver plate in aqueous solutions of surfactants, C n H2 n +1SO4Na (n = 8, 10, 12, 16). The nanoparticles thus produced were characterized by electron microscopy and UV−visible absorption spectroscopy. The abundances of the nanoparticles before and after centrifugation were measured as a function of the surfactant concentration. The concentration dependence of the abundance implies that the surfactant coverage and the charge state o
Colloidal gold nanoparticles with a broad size distribution were prepared by laser ablation of a gold metal plate in an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and were fragmented under irradiation of a 532 nm laser at different SDS concentrations and laser fluences. Gold nanoparticles with a desired average size (1.7−5.5 nm in diameter) were prepared by tuning properly the surfactant concentration and the laser fluence. The concentration of SDS was found to be higher than a critical mi
Platinum nanoparticles were produced by laser ablation of a platinum metal plate in an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The absorption spectrum of the platinum nanoparticles was essentially the same as that of platinum nanoparticles chemically prepared in a solution. The size distribution of the nanoparticles thus produced was measured to be in the range of 1−7 nm in diameter by an electron microscope. The abundance of the nanoparticles changes with the concentration of SDS in t
Gold nanoparticles having an average diameter of ∼8 nm were prepared in an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate by laser ablation at 1064 nm of a gold metal plate and were irradiated by a laser at 532 nm for size-reduction of the gold nanoparticles produced by laser ablation. The diameters of the gold nanoparticles thus produced were measured directly by electron microscopy, while the average diameter was estimated from the optical absorption spectrum of the solution containing the nanopar
Gold nanoparticles with an average diameter of ∼20 nm were prepared in water by laser ablation at 1064 nm against a gold metal plate in it. The gold nanoparticles thus prepared in water and those mixed with an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were irradiated with an intense pulsed laser at 532 nm. The products in the solution were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and optical absorption spectroscopy. The TEM images of the products revealed that gold nanonetworks
Colloidal gold nanoparticles having an average diameter of 8 nm were prepared by laser ablation at 1064 nm of a gold metal plate in an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and were subjected to fragmentation under irradiation of a pulsed laser at 532 nm. Gold clusters exhibiting no significant optical absorption in the visible wavelength region were produced in a solution, together with nanoparticles. UV−visible optical absorption spectroscopy revealed that the gold clusters grow gra
We demonstrated that platinum nanoparticles dispersed in pure water were "soldered" by gold into higher-order structures such as "nanowebs". In practice, gold nanoparticles in water containing the platinum nanoparticles were melted by irradiation of a pulsed 532-nm laser, which excites selectively the surface plasmon band of the gold nanoparticles, and the melted gold nanoparticles solder the platinum nanoparticles together into the nanowebs. Optical absorption spectroscopy and electron microsco
Adsorption and desorption of N2 molecules onto cationic Ta and Rh clusters in the gas phase were investigated in the temperature range of 300-1000 K by using thermal desorption spectrometry in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For Ta6(+), the first N2 molecule was found to adsorb dissociatively, and it remained adsorbed when Ta6(+)N2 was heated to 1000 K. In contrast, the second and the subsequent N2 molecules adsorbed weakly as a molecular form and were released int
A liquid-droplet injector has been developed that delivers pristine microcrystals to an X-ray irradiation area for conducting serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) with an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). By finely tuning the pulsed liquid droplets in time and space, a high hit rate of the XFEL pulses to microcrystals in the droplets was achieved for measurements using 5 µm tetragonal lysozyme crystals, which produced 4265 indexable diffraction images in about 30 min. The structure was deter
