Few-layered graphene sheets, synthesized by direct current arc-discharge method using NH(3) as one of the buffer gases, were dispersed in chitosan/acetic acid solutions. FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the presence of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of graphene sheets that may assist the good dispersion of graphene in chitosan solution. Graphene/chitosan films were produced by solution casting method. The mechanical properties of composite films were tested by
The development of facile and versatile strategies with low-cost for hydrogel construction is of tremendous scientific interest. Herein, we demonstrate that naturally derived, cost-effective tannic acid (TA) can be an efficient gelation binder for the hydrogel formation with a series of commercially available water-soluble polymers. With a five-polyphenol-arm structure, TA molecules are able to grasp polymer chains through either hydrogen or ionic bonds and cross-link them together by coordinate
We demonstrate a facile and universal strategy in the fabrication of dual-cross-linked (DC) single network hydrogels with high toughness, “nonswellability”, rapid self-healing, and versatile adhesiveness based on polymer–tannic acid (TA) multiple hydrogen bonds. Two widely used hydrogels, physically cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) and chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide, have been transformed to TA-based DC hydrogels by dipping the corresponding aerogels into TA solution. The second cross-li
Underwater adhesives are in high demand in both commercial and industrial sectors. Compared with adhesives used in dry (air) environments, adhesives used for wet or submerged surfaces in aqueous environments have specific challenges in development and performance. In this review, focus is on adhesives demonstrating macroscopic adhesion to wet/underwater substrates. The current strategies are first introduced for different types of underwater adhesives, and then an overview is provided of the dev
Abstract Electrostatic interaction is strong but usually diminishes in high ionic-strength environments. Biosystems can use this interaction through adjacent cationic–aromatic amino acids sequence of proteins even in a saline medium. Application of such specific sequence to the development of cationic polymer materials adhesive to negatively charged surfaces in saline environments is challenging due to the difficulty in controlling the copolymer sequences. Here, we discover that copolymers with
Abstract The development of adhesives that can achieve robust and repeatable adhesion to various surfaces underwater is promising; however, this remains a major challenge primarily because the surface hydration layer weakens the interfacial molecular interactions. Herein, a strategy is proposed to develop tough hydrogels that are robust, reusable, and long‐lasting for underwater adhesion. Hydrogels from cationic and aromatic monomers with an aromatic‐rich composition inspired by the amino acid r
Since the birth of synthetic hydrogel 60 years ago, hydrogels possessing various useful properties and functions have been developed. The research directions of hydrogels have expanded to diverse application fields as well. However, in contrast to natural hydrogels found in biological soft tissues, which have elaborate structures from molecular to macroscopic scales and sophisticated functions, synthetic hydrogels only have very simple structures and naive functions. We have great opportunities
Adhesiveness of hydrogels depends on the balance and synergy of their cohesion and adhesion. However, it is a challenge to fabricate catechol-based hydrogels with high adhesiveness because the required condition for cohesion and adhesion of these hydrogels is in conflict with each other: strong cohesion (gelation) requires a weak basic condition, whereas strong adhesion requires an acidic condition. Here, we demonstrated that by utilizing polyphenol supramolecular chemistry, the coexistence of s
Recent research has indicated that polydopamine and synthetic eumelanins are optoelectronic biomaterials in which one-dimensional aggregates composed of ordered-stacking oligomers have been proposed as unique organic semiconductors. However, improving the ordered-stacking of oligomers in polydopamine nanostructures is a big challenge. Herein, we first demonstrate how folic acid molecules influence the morphology and nanostructure of polydopamine via tuning the π-π interactions of oligomers. MALD
Mesoporous polymer nanoparticles have broad applications in drug delivery, bioengineering, and catalysis. Selective swelling of block copolymer (BCP) is one promising strategy to generate controllable and switchable porous polymer nanostructures. Previous studies of selective swelling of block copolymer nanostructures revealed that the swelling condition, BCP composition, their architectures and sizes are involved in structural transformation in swelling. To clearly understand the effect of thes
Although cation−π interactions play a critical role in biological systems, experimental studies in aqueous environments are limited due to a lack of suitable systems and methods. The recent success in synthesizing water-soluble poly(cation−π) bearing adjacent cationic/aromatic residues provides excellent systems for studying cation−π interactions in aqueous environments. In this study, we investigated competitive cation−π interactions between small cations and macrocations with phenyl groups in
Herein we report how to control the nanostructures and sizes of polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) nanoparticles via manipulating freezing in solvent-exchange. By characterizing and analyzing the distinct structural features of the obtained nanoparticles, we recognized that micelle self-assembly happens in the precipitation of PS-b-P2VP when water is added into the block copolymer (BCP) solution. Solvent properties significantly influence micelle types that are vesicles in acetone/H
We demonstrated a one-pot, soap-free fabrication of porous polycaprolactone microspheres by combining nanoprecipitation and hydrolysis. The obtained porous polycaprolactone microspheres show great advantages for application in drug delivery.
