Hang Lee 교수의 연구실은 주로 동물 유전체학과 분자 진화 생물학을 중심으로, 주로 한국과 동아시아 지역의 토착 동물 종들 — 예를 들어, 한국 고릴라, 시베리아 캐시우스, 돼지, 쥐지기 등 — 의 유전자 다양성과 계통수적 관계를 밝혀내는 데 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 특히 미토콘드리아 DNA를 활용한 허플로타입 분석과 분자 계통수학적 접근을 통해 종 분화, 지역적 유전자 구조, 그리고 생물의 분포 역학을 규명하고 있습니다. 이 연구들은 생물 다양성 보존과 종 분류학적 이해에 기여하고 있습니다.
