The package support.CEs provides seven basic functions that support the implementation of choice experiments (CEs) in R: two functions for creating a CE design, which is based on orthogonal main-effect arrays; a function for converting a CE design into questionnaire format; a function for converting a CE design into a design matrix; a function for making the data set suitable for the implementation of a conditional logit model; a function for calculating the goodness-of-fit measures of an estima
This paper briefly introduces choice experiments using R, which is a language and environment for statistical computing. Choice experiments belong to the family of stated preference methods and are applied to numerous issues in research fields such as marketing science, transportation economics, environmental economics, agricultural economics, or health economics. We explain the process of creating choice sets using the AlgDesign package and the process of statistically analyzing responses using
Case 1 best–worst scaling (BWS1) has been used in a wide variety of research fields. BWS1 is attractive, relative to discrete choice experiments, because individual’s preferences for items can be easily measured. Despite the relative ease of implementation, BWS1 analysis still requires the use of software packages. When used in conjunction with other packages, the new and revised functions in the package support.BWS allow BWS1 analysis to be conducted using either the counting approach or the mo
Case 2 (profile case) best-worst scaling (BWS) is a question-based survey method for measuring preferences for attribute levels. Several existing R packages help to implement the construction of Case 2 BWS questions (profiles) and the discrete choice analysis of the responses to the questions. Structuring the dataset for Case 2 BWS analysis is, however, complicated: there are several model variants for the analysis, and independent variables are set according to the variants. This complexity mak
Stated Preference Methods Using R explains how to use stated preference (SP) methods, which are a family of survey methods, to measure people's preferences based on decision making in hypothetical choice situations. Along with giving introductory explanations of the methods, the book collates information on existing R functions and packages as well
Purpose The production process of processed food products may involve several countries. This multi-dimensionality of the country of origin (COO) may affect consumer preferences for the products. We apply Case 2 best–worst scaling to measure Japanese consumers’ preferences for three dimensions of the COO of a vegetable juice product. Design/methodology/approach The three dimensions of the COO include these: the country where the raw materials of the product were grown (the country of growing), t
Abstract The R package DCchoice is designed to mitigate programing-related barriers to the application of dichotomous choice contingent valuation (DCCV) methods in empirical studies. Since its release in 2014, DCchoice has been updated. This paper introduces the current version of DCchoice which supports single-, one-and-one-half-, and double-bounded DCCVs, with and without a spike. Additionally, the willingness-to-pay and its confidence intervals can be calculated for a representative responden
This study examined Japanese consumers' valuation of a good agricultural practice (GAP) label on packaged milk and investigated the effect of detailed GAP information on valuation. A total of 624 Japanese consumers were asked to select their most preferred milk through an online survey. The milk was assumed to have three attributes: the GAP label, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points certification, and price. The results showed that consumers' valuation of GAP was significantly positive.
In this article, we consider the noncompensatory valuation of food safety among Japanese consumers with regard to the purchase of beef. Using a choice experiment with a wide range of choice rules, we examine the valuation of beef by Japanese consumers in terms of the country of origin and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)-test status of beef. The results reveal that a Random Parameters Logit (RPL) model along with the noncompensatory choice rules is more suitable than a compensatory model f
Abstract This study examines farmers’ preferences for weather index insurance (WII) in the Ayeyarwady Delta, Myanmar, using discrete choice experiments. It employs data taken from a survey of 317 rice farmers in the district of Labutta in the Ayeyarwady Region, which was conducted in March 2019. After being informed about WII and the trigger conditions, farmers were asked to answer discrete choice questions on WII packages. The hypothetical WII packages consisted of three attributes: the types o
This study examined the effectiveness of Internet-enabled mobile phones in informing consumers about food safety. Identical questions about place of origin and specially grown tomatoes were asked of 142 Japanese consumers via an Internet-enabled mobile phone before and after providing information about the frequency of agrochemical applications to specially and conventionally grown tomatoes in some prefectures. Although participants changed their evaluations in response to the information, some
