The objectives of this study were to characterize change in surface properties of tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (TZP) after hydrophilic treatment, and to determine the effect of such changes on initial attachment of osteoblast-like cells. Roughened surfaces were produced by alumina-blasting and acid-etching. Hydrophilic treatment comprised application of immediately after blasting and acid-etching (Blast/Etch), oxygen plasma (O2-Plasma), ultraviolet light (UV). Specimens stored in air were us
An exceptionally heavy rainstorm hit the coastal area of the western part of Japan on 23 July 1983. The 6-h rainfall accumulation exceeded 300 mm locally. At its peak period, the hourly precipitation rate was as high as 90 mm. Yet the area of heavy precipitation was limited in its extent so that the Maddox criteria for midlatitude Mesoscale Convection Complex was not met in terms of size, when viewed in satellite data. The precipitation occurred in the warm, moist southwesterly sector of a weak,
LES (Large-eddy simulation) of swirling cold-flows in a pulverized coal combustion furnace is performed and validated by comparing with experiment and RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) simulation with the standard k-ε model. Unstructured grids and energy-conserving scheme are employed to obtain robust and accurate solutions at high swirl numbers. The results show that the LES is in good agreement with the experiment in terms of the recirculation flow, though the RANS simulation overestimate
Large-eddy simulation (LES) is applied to a pulverized coal combustion field in a combustion test furnace with a practical advanced low NOx burner called CI-α burner, and its validity is investigated by comparing with the experiment. The motion of coal particles is calculated by the Lagrangian method with a parcel model. In the coal combustion modeling, three chemical processes are considered, namely devolatilization, char combustion and gaseous combustion. The direct closure SSFRRM(scale simila
High pressure synthesis under 6 GPa using a cubic-anvil-type apparatus were applied to investigation of new compounds in Mg-TM systems. The crystal structure, thermal stability and reactivity with hydrogen for the newly synthesized compounds were studied. The Mg4Ni compound belonging to space group F43m with a lattice parameter of a = 1.9987(1) nm was synthesized as a new compound at 1173 K for 8 h under 6 GPa. It decomposed to Mg and Mg2Ni phase at 545 K as exothermic reaction. In Mg-Cu systems
Zinc chlorophyll derivatives Zn-1-3 possessing a tertiary amino group at the C31 position have been synthesized through reductive amination of methyl pyropheophorbide-d obtained from naturally occurring chlorophyll-a. In a dilute CH2 Cl2 solution as well as in a dilute 10 %(v/v) CH2 Cl2 /hexane solution, Zn-1 possessing a dimethylamino group at the C31 position showed red-shifted UV/Vis absorption and intensified exciton-coupling
