히로시 요츠야나기 교수의 연구실은 바이러스성 간염, 특히 간세포암화(hepatocellular carcinoma)의 원인 역할을 하는 희귀 바이러스, 예를 들어 간염B바이러스의 '은폐성 감염'(occult HBV)과 TT바이러스의 기여를 중심으로 연구를 진행하고 있습니다. 특히 비-B, 비-C 간세포암 환자에서 HBV DNA가 얼마나 흔히 존재하는지와 그 임상적 의미를 규명하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있으며, 바이러스의 복제 및 전파 메커니즘에 대한 분석도 함께 수행하고 있습니다. 또한 간염A 바이러스의 대변 배출 지속 기간을 PCR 기반 분석으로 규명함으로써 감염의 전파 역학을 이해하는 데 기여하고 있습니다.

Serum and liver tissues from hepatitis B surface antigen-negative/anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-negative (non-B, non-C) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients in Japan were examined for the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), HCV, and TT virus (TTV) by polymerase chain reaction. The studies evaluated the contribution of these viruses to pathogenesis of HCC. The replication of HBV is ongoing in a substantial proportion of healthy blood donors who have anti-HBc. Blood from such donors may contain very low levels of HBV free of immune complex formation and should be excluded for transfusion. The fact that such blood donors apparently lacked liver disease suggests no pathogenicity of such "occult" HBV.

Genotypes of hepatitis B virus (HBV) were determined in 145 patients with acute hepatitis B from various districts in Japan to establish their geographic distribution and evaluating the influence on the clinical illness and outcome. Genotypes were A in 27 (19%) patients, B in 8 (5%), C in 109 (75%) and mixed with B and C in the remaining one (1%).
