The authors report the expansion of the temperature range of cholesteric blue phases by doping nanoparticles. When spherical gold nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 3.7 nm were doped in a blue phase-exhibiting multi-component liquid crystal mixture, the temperature range of the cholesteric blue phase increased from 0.5 to 5 °C, while the clearing temperature decreased by approximately 13 °C. The recovery of direct dye and acid dye from dilute aqueous solution by adsorption on chitosan fiber, which is cheaper than an activated carbon fiber, appeared technically and economically feasible. Continuous tuning of lasing wavelength is achieved in cholesteric liquid crystal lasers by embedding a network of nanopores with an average size of 10 nm filled with liquid crystals inside a polymerized matrix with helical order. The study presented in this paper is focused on processing squid wastes by using sub-critical water extraction and hydrolysis to produce valuable substances.
