In the green belt surrounding Buenos Aires and La Plata cities, Argentina, sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) is grown commercially under greenhouse mainly for fresh consumption. In February 2008, plants showing typical symptoms of downy mildew were found in greenhouses in La Plata. The disease was widespread in the cropped area with 100% prevalence. Infection resulted in chlorotic leaves with a greyish to dark brown fungal-like growth on the lower surfaces. A sample was deposited in the local herba
Eight species of Marssonina parasitic on 21 species of host plants from Korea are described and illustrated. They are Marssonina brunnea (Ellis & Everh.) Magnus, M. capsulicola (Rostr.) Magnus, M. celastri H.D. Shin & H.T. Lee, M. coronaria (Ellis & Davis) Davis, M. fragariae (Lib.) Kleb., M. juglandis (Lib.) Magnus, M. rosae (Lib.) Died, and M. sennenis (Gonz. Frag.) Vassiljevsky & Karak. Of these, M. capsulicola and M. coronaria sometimes poss three-celled conidia and M. sennenis is characteri
The name Golovinomyces cynoglossi s. lat. is traditionally applied to a complex of morphologically similar powdery mildews on hosts of the plant family Boraginaceae. The current species-level taxonomy within this complex is ambiguous due to the lack of phylogenetic examinations. The present study applied phylogenetic methods to clarify the taxonomy of G. cynoglossi s. lat. Phylogenetic analysis of rDNA ITS sequences retrieved from Asian, European and North American specimens
Leafy lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is one of the most important crops in Korea, cultivated throughout the year in plastic houses. During autumn 2005, severe outbreaks of powdery mildew occurred in plantings in plastic houses near Suwon in central Korea. Further surveying of commercial fields in central and southern Korea revealed widespread occurrence and severe losses. Infections often caused leaf distortions, withering and reduced growth. No head lettuce was found to be affected. White superficial
Abstract In July and August 2013, blossom blight and soft rot of pods were observed on okra in experimental fields in Iksan and Jeju, Korea. Infection started in fading flower petals, spread to entire flowers and young pods, resulting in blighted blossoms and soft rot of pods. Severe infection caused early falling of blossoms and fruit drop, reducing plant vigour in the summer season. On the basis of the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of two molecular markers ITS rDNA an
