Half-fluence PDT is as effective as conventional PDT, while minimizing the deleterious effect on choriocapillaris perfusion and retinal thickness.
The RP patients with depression had poorer vision-related functions compared with those patients without depression, which cannot be explained by the visual acuity. Interventions to diagnose and treat depression are necessary to enhance the overall quality of life in RP patients.
Diabetes can lead to serious microvascular complications like proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), which is the leading cause of blindness in adults. The proteomic changes that occur during PDR cannot be measured in the human retina for ethical reasons, but could be reflected by proteomic changes in vitreous humor. Thus, we considered that comparisons between the proteome profiles of the vitreous humors of PDR and nondiabetic controls could lead to the discovery of novel pathogenic proteins
Pathologic myopia (PM) is one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide. The pathophysiology of PM is not fully understood, but the axial elongation of the eye followed by chorioretinal thinning is suggested as a key mechanism. Pathologic myopia may lead to many complications such as chorioretinal atrophy, foveoschisis, choroidal neovascularization, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, cataract, and glaucoma. Some complications affect visual acuity significantly, showing poor visual pro
To determine whether there are differences in the immunopathogenesis of different endogenous uveitis syndromes, the phenotypic characteristics of immune cells were analysed among patients with endogenous uveitis. The aetiology of the uveitis included idiopathic recurrent acute anterior uveitis (18 patients), idiopathic intermediate uveitis (13 patients), Behçet's uveitis (17 patients), Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (7 patients), and so on. Flow cytometric analysis was performed using immune cell
These results show that a systemic defect in elastic fiber deposition affects Bruch's membrane integrity and leads to more aggressive CNV growth. The latter may be partially mediated by abnormal signaling from the accumulation of soluble elastin peptides.
The findings of this study showing both functional as well as structural changes of retina measured by multifocal electroretinogram and SS-OCT in preclinical AD suggest the potential use of retinal biomarkers as a tool for early detection of in vivo AD pathologic abnormalities in CN older adults.
In eyes that received scleral fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses, PPV decreased the chances of postoperative intraocular pressure elevation and intraocular lens dislocation but increased the likelihood of intraocular lens capture and the magnitude of postoperative myopic shift.
Ocular presentation and survival times may be different in VRL patients according to the association with CNS involvement.
Oxidative stress has been implicated as critical pathogenic factors contributing to the etiology of diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases. This study investigated antioxidative effect of ascorbic acid and astaxanthin on ARPE-19 cells within an oxidative stress model induced by common biological sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at concentrations of 0.1-0.8 mM and 20-100 mJ/cm2 of ultraviolet B (UVB) were treated to ARPE-
After 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomies for proliferative diabetic retinopathy, postoperative hypotony and the need for tamponade increased the rates of immediate and recurrent PVH, respectively. Immediate PVH occurred in 45.2% of the patients but did not affect early visual recovery. A 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy resulted in a favorable incidence of recurrent PVH (11.8%) during the first 6 months.
The systemic administration of UDCA and TUDCA suppressed laser-induced CNV formation in rats, which might be associated with anti-inflammatory action. The result indicates that UDCA and TUDCA are potential candidate drugs for the treatment of many CNV-related retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration.
SFCT in eyes with RVO was significantly greater than it was in normal contralateral eyes. After Ozurdex injection, SFCT decreased significantly. Improvement in visual acuity was correlated with the decrease in SFCT after Ozurdex injection.
These results suggest that fluorescein angiography may be helpful for predicting visual prognosis for Behçet patients with panuveitis.
