Although the anesthesia for VATS in pediatric patients was successfully accomplished, the infants and younger children presented with more intra-operative problems when compared with older children. The anesthetic management for VATS in infants and younger children requires careful and vigilant monitoring.
Adding midazolam to ramosetron had no advantages over ramosetron alone in reducing the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in children undergoing strabismus surgery.
The goal of this in vitro study was to examine the effect of the alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist dexmedetomidine on phenylephrine (alpha-1 adrenoceptor agonist)-induced contraction in isolated rat aortae and to elucidate the associated cellular mechanisms, with a particular focus on alpha-1 adrenoceptor antagonism. Dexmedetomidine dose-response curves were generated in isolated endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded rat aortae precontracted with phenylephrine or 5-hydroxytryptamine. Endo
To evaluate the potential risk for intra-aortic balloon (IAB)-induced obstruction to the celiac axis (CA) or the renal artery (RA) when IAB size is chosen according to patient height and the tip is placed 2 cm distal to the origin of the left subclavian artery (LSCA), the computed tomography images of 150 Asian adults were reviewed to identify the distance from the LSCA to the CA (LSCA-CA) and to the RA (LSCA-RA). The diameter of the aorta at the level of the T9 vertebra, CA, and RA was also mea
Lower oxygen concentration during anesthetic induction is associated with less atelectasis formation immediately after anesthetic induction in children. In addition, applying 80% oxygen instead of 100% oxygen is not enough to prevent atelectasis formation, and 60% oxygen should be applied to prevent atelectasis. However, this effect does not last until the end of surgery.
Pretreatment of lidocaine with a tourniquet showed no more benefit to prevent injection pain of propofol LCT/MCT compared to a premixed injection with lidocaine.
This simple formula can accurately calculate the safe depth of the caudal epidural space to prevent unintended dural puncture during caudal block in children. However, further clinical studies based on this formula are needed to substantiate its utility.
A child's age, height, and body surface area should be considered when deciding the induction dose of propofol. Additionally, the formula that we have proposed can be used to estimate the dose of propofol required to induce sedation in children undergoing imaging.
Genotyping of MDR1 may not be related to the response of midazolam in children.
Shoulder rotation significantly increased the dimension of the acoustic target window for paramedian thoracic epidural access in the lateral decubitus position at both T6/7 and T9/10 levels. Further clinical studies are needed to investigate the effect of shoulder rotation on thoracic epidural access.
