Mixing enhancement has drawn great attention from designers of micromixers, since the flow in a microchannel is usually characterized by a low Reynolds number (Re) which makes the mixing quite a difficult task to accomplish. In this paper, a novel integrated efficient micromixer named serpentine laminating micromixer (SLM) has been designed, simulated, fabricated and fully characterized. In the SLM, a high level of efficient mixing can be achieved by combining two general chaotic mixing mechanis
Functionally designed elastomeric nanofiber fabrics made of the equimolar copolyester, poly(L-lactide-co-epsilon-caprolactone) (PLCL), with type I collagen or the tri-n-butylamine salt of heparin (heparin-TBA) were co-electrospun using 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) as a solvent. The co-electrospun fabrics (mixing ratio: 0, 5, 10, 30, 50, 70, and 100 wt % of collagen to PLCL) consisted of nanoscale fibers with a mean diameter ranging from approximately 120 to 520 nm. An increase in col
A significant problem that affects tissue-engineered electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds is poor infiltration of cells into the three-dimensional (3D) structure. Physical manipulation can enhance cellular infiltration into electrospun scaffolds. The porosity of electrospun nanofibers was highly enlarged by ultrasonication in an aqueous solution. The porosity and related property changes on a series of nanofibers were observed to be dependent on ultrasonication time and energy. To evaluate cell inf
Blood typing is the most important test for both transfusion recipients and blood donors. In this paper, a low cost disposable blood typing integrated microfluidic biochip has been designed, fabricated and characterized. In the biochip, flow splitting microchannels, chaotic micromixers, reaction microchambers and detection microfilters are fully integrated. The loaded sample blood can be divided by 2 or 4 equal volumes through the flow splitting microchannel so that one can perform 2 or 4 blood
The last decade has seen artificial blood vessels composed of natural polymer nanofibers grafted into human bodies to facilitate the recovery of damaged blood vessels. However, electrospun nanofibers (ENs) of biocompatible materials such as chitosan (CTS) suffer from poor mechanical properties. This study describes the design and fabrication of artificial blood vessels composed of a blend of CTS and PCL ENs and coated with PCL strands using rapid prototyping technology. The resulting tubular ves
Plant-derived extracellular nanovesicles contain RNA and proteins with unique and diverse pharmacological mechanisms. The extracellular nanovesicles encapsulating plant extracts resemble exosomes as they have a round, lipid bilayer morphology. Ginseng is anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, immunostimulant, and osteogenic/anti-osteoporotic. Here, we confirmed that ginseng-derived extracellular nanovesicles (GDNs) inhibit osteoclast differentiation and elucidated the associated molecular mechanisms. W
A novel GQD-complex was designed as a promising theranostic agent for the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer.
Abstract We developed improved models (called ORW and ORW3) of existing “orthotropic fitted” closure approximations (ORF or ORL) for use with a wide range of fiber‐fiber interaction coefficients. Closure approximation refers to the approximation of a higher order tensor in terms of a lower order tensor. Principal values of the 4th order tensor are assumed in terms of polynomial expansions of the eigenvalues of the 2nd order tensor. Unknown parameters are determined by a least‐square fitting tech
In recent years, gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been reported to affect the regeneration of bone tissue. The goal of this study was to improve bone tissue regeneration by using targeted GNPs. We fabricated a functionalized GNPs conjugated with alendronate (ALD), of the bisphosphonate group. Subsequently, the ALD, GNPs, and ALD conjugated GNPs (GNPs-ALD) were analyzed by ultraviolet-visible absorbance (UV-vis) spectrophotometer, Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometer
