In this study, we tested several hypotheses related to changes in finger interaction and multifinger synergies during multifinger force production tasks in Parkinson's disease. Ten patients with Parkinson's disease, mostly early stage, and 11 healthy control subjects participated in the study. Synergies were defined as covaried adjustment of commands to fingers that stabilized the total force produced by the hand. Both Parkinson's disease patients and control subjects performed accurate isometri
The aim of this study was to discover finger interaction indices during single-finger ramp tasks and multi-finger coordination during a steady state force production in two directions, flexion, and extension. Furthermore, the indices of anticipatory adjustment of elemental variables (i.e., finger forces) prior to a quick pulse force production were quantified. It is currently unknown whether the organization and anticipatory modulation of stability properties are affected by force directions and
To date, limited examples of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) can be found that truly exploit the power of layer-by-layer nanoassembly to combine multiple functions into a complex multilayer. We demonstrate that PEMs can be designed as optimized coatings for implantable biosensors, exhibiting both diffusion control and protein resistance. PEM coatings comprising strong-weak and weak-weak pairs were evaluated, resulting in decreases in glucose diffusivity up to 5 orders of magnitude compared to
Laser absorption is one of the most important parameters governing laser–matter interactions. The laser energy absorption on nanowire array targets is measured for the first time in the relativistic regime at intensities of 1019 W/cm2 and compared to foil targets. The results show that the laser energy absorption of 0.7 ps frequency doubled (527 nm) pulses on Au nanowire targets varies widely with nanowire parameters, reaching laser energy absorption values up to ∼71% of the incident energy, sig
The performance results of the athletes competed in the 1988-2008 Olympic Games were analyzed (n = 166). The data were obtained from the IAAF official protocols. In the principal component analysis, the first three principal components explained 70% of the total variance. In the 1st principal component (with 43.1% of total variance explained) the largest factor loadings were for 100m (0.89), 400m (0.81), 110m hurdle run (0.76), and long jump (–0.72). This factor can be interpreted as the 'sprint
The aim of this study was to test the mechanical advantage (MA) hypothesis in multifinger torque production tasks in humans: fingers with longer moment arms produce greater force magnitudes during torque production tasks. There were eight experimental conditions: two prehension types determined by different mechanical constraints (i.e., fixed- and free-object prehension) with two torque directions (supination and pronation) and two torque magnitudes (0.24 and 0.48 N·m). The subjects were asked t
