Our work provided a comprehensive set of methods to analyze mouse cardiac transcriptome complexity at individual exon and transcript levels. Applications of the methods may infer important new insights to gene regulation in normal and disease hearts in terms of exon utilization and potential involvement of novel components of cardiac transcriptome.
In this letter, we calculate numerically the emitter-collector gaps that maximize the power conversion efficiency of vacuum thermionic energy converters (TECs). The optimum arises because efficiency drops both at very large gaps, due to space-charge limitations on the TEC current, and at very small gaps, due to the increased parasitic heat loss via near-field radiative heat transfer. For typical TECs made with cesiated tungsten electrodes, the optimal gaps range from 900 nm to 3 μm and are appro
An aerobic, non-motile, Gram-negative, orange-pigmented, rod-shaped, astaxanthin-producing marine bacterium was isolated from the Haeundae Coast, Korea. This strain, BC74171T, produced carotenoids, mainly astaxanthin. All the type strains of the genus Paracoccus were compared with strain BC74171T using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, fatty acid patterns and physiological reaction profiles. Based on the results of these analyses, it is proposed that strain BC74171T represents a novel species, Pa
RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) technologies hold enormous promise for novel discoveries in genomics and transcriptomics. In the past year, a surge of reports has analyzed RNA-Seq data to gain a global view of the RNA editome. Opposing results have been presented, giving rise to extensive debate surrounding one of the first such studies in which a daunting list of all 12 types of RNA-DNA differences (RDDs) were identified. Although a consensus is forming that some of the initial "paradigm-shifting" res
Periodontitis is a chronic and multifactorial inflammatory disease that can lead to tooth loss. At present, the diagnosis for periodontitis is primarily based on clinical examination and radiographic parameters. Detecting the periodontal pathogens at the subgingival plaque requires skilled professionals to collect samples. Periodontal pathogens are also detected on various mucous membranes in patients with periodontitis. In this study, we characterized the oral microbiome profiles from buccal mu
There has been strong demand for the development of an accurate but simple method to assess the freshness of food. In this study, we demonstrated a system to determine food freshness by analyzing the spectral response from a portable visible/near-infrared (VIS/NIR) spectrometer using the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based machine learning algorithm. Spectral response data from salmon, tuna, and beef incubated at 25 °C were obtained every minute for 30 h and then categorized into three stat
Graphene has attracted great attention as an alternative to conventional metallic or transparent conducting electrodes. Despite its similarities with conventional electrodes, recent studies have shown that a single-atom layer of graphene possesses unique characteristics, such as a tunable work function and transparencies for electric potential, reactivity, and wetting. Nevertheless, a systematic analysis of graphene and semiconductor junction characteristics has not yet been carried out. Here, w
In this paper, we report low work function mechanically and thermally robust microfabricated thermionic emitters. Conformal deposition of polycrystalline-silicon carbide (poly-SiC) was used to form stiff suspension legs with U-shaped cross sections, which increased the out-of-plane rigidity and helped to maintain a micrometer-scale gap between emitter and collector. The structurally robust poly-SiC suspended structure was coated with a thin tungsten layer to improve adhesion of a work function l
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders that are highly heterogeneous in clinical symptoms as well as etiologies. Mutations in SHANK2 are associated with ASD and accordingly, Shank2 knockout mouse shows ASD-like behavioral phenotypes, including social deficits. Intriguingly, two lines of Shank2 knockout (KO) mouse generated by deleting different exons (exon 6-7 or exon 7) showed distinct cellular phenotypes. Previously, we compared gene expressions between Shank
Abstract. The biochemical composition of particulate organic matter (POM) produced through phytoplankton photosynthesis is important in determining food quality for planktonic consumers as well as the physiological conditions of phytoplankton. Major environmental factors controlling the biochemical composition were seasonally investigated in Gwangyang Bay, South Korea, which has only natural conditions (e.g., no artificial dams). Water samples for the biochemical compositions were obtained from
