Individuals with PPDM have higher risk of mortality and hospitalization compared with individuals with T2DM. Guidelines for management of PPDM need to be developed with a view to preventing excess deaths and hospitalizations in individuals with PPDM.
Pancreatitis significantly increases the risk of pancreatic cancer in individuals with diabetes. In particular, PPDM poses the highest risk for pancreatic cancer.
Metformin promotes a survival benefit in individuals with PPDM but not PCRD. Reverse causality may play a role in the association between insulin use and mortality in PCRD.
The findings suggest that the burden of pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, DEP, and EPD will rise in the next 3 decades unless healthcare systems introduce effective prevention or early treatment strategies for diseases of the pancreas and their sequelae.
The findings suggest that long-term exposure to high ambient air pollution may lead to cortical thinning and reduced subcortical volume in adults. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP7133.
Most of the suicides motivated by physical illnesses contacted medical care during 1 year prior to suicide, but many of them did not undergo psychiatric evaluation. This underscores the need for programs to provide psychosocial support to patients with physical illnesses.
It is well established that individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) may develop exocrine pancreatic dysfunction (EPD) requiring pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, whereas the converse relationship has been poorly studied. Pancreatitis is a disease that is well suited to investigate the latter as it is often characterized by the development of EPD and/or new-onset DM. The aim was to investigate the association between EPD and the risk of new-onset DM in individuals after the first attack of p
These findings show that [F]-THK5351 retention may be detected in cortical regions correlating with svPPA pathology.
Acute pancreatitis (AP) often progresses to recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP). We investigated the relationship between the use of insulin after AP and progression from AP to RAP or CP, as well as the effect of diabetes status on the relationship. Using nationwide pharmaceutical dispensing data and hospital discharge data, insulin-naïve individuals were followed from first AP admission. Multivariable time-dependent Cox regression analyses were conducted. In the ove
<b>Objective:</b> To investigate the frequency and risk factors for mental disorders following pancreatitis. <b>Methods:</b> Patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) were identified (<i>n</i> = 18,074) from a nationwide database in New Zealand (1998-2015). They were followed from their first hospital admissions for AP or CP to incident mental disorders. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using multivariable Cox regression analyses. <b>R
Little is known about the effect of air pollution on Alzheimer's disease (AD)-specific brain structural pathologies. There is also a lack of evidence on whether this effect leads to poorer cognitive function. We investigated whether, and the extent to which, AD-like cortical atrophy mediated the association between air pollution exposures and cognitive function in dementia-free adults. We used cross-sectional data from 640 participants who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging and the Montr
