Comparing the environmental impacts of building materials at the building level can be biased because a building design is optimized for a primary structural material. To achieve objective comparisons, this study compares the environmental impact of reinforced concrete (RC), cross-laminated timber (CLT), and timber-concrete composite (TCC) at the component level with equivalent structural performance. A slab was selected as the target structure member because its design does not consider lateral
We develop a new method to map (i.e. allocate and schedule) real-time applications into certain multiprocessor systems. Its objectives are: the minimization of the number of processors used; and the minimization of the deadline missing time. Given a parallel program with real time constraints and a multiprocessor system, our method finds schedules of the program in the system which satisfy all the real time constraints with minimum number of processors. The minimization is carried out through a
Software-as-a-Service is becoming popular in the software business, due to its rapid delivery and cost effectiveness in development and maintenance. Software-as-a-Service should be provided in single code base and operated as a single instance. To meet these constraints and requirements from various customers, Software-as-a-Service must be highly configurable. To develop configurable Software-as-a-Service, it is important to elicit and analyze configuration requirements in the early stages of de
The fire resistance of structural wooden walls covered with fire-resisting boards was investigated. A 49-mm-thick gypsum board (No. 1 and No. 2), a 24-mm-thick diatomite (No. 3), and a combination of gypsum and diatomite board (No. 4 and No. 5) were theoretically designed for 2-h fire resistance. As a result, when the gypsum board was fixed to the wood studs with nails (No. 1), there was no damage after 2 h, as predicted. When diatomite boards were used on the surface to face the fire (No. 3 and
This paper presents a method for power and ground (p/g) network routing for high speed CMOS chips with multiple p/g pads. Our objective is not to reduce the total amount of the ground bounce, but to distribute it more evenly among the pads while the routing area is kept to a minimum. We first show that proper p/g terminal to pad assignment is necessary to reduce the maximum ground bounce and then present a heuristic for performing simultaneous assignment and p/g net routing. In Android OS, we discover that a notification service called inotify is a new side-channel allowing malware to identify file accesses associated with the display of a security-relevant UI screen. This paper proposes a phishing attack that detects victim UI screens by their file accesses in applications and steals private information.
One of the major sources of power drain in smartphones is a frame rendering and display process called graphics pipeline, in which power consumption depends largely on frame rendering operations per second (fps), known as the frame rate, and the quantity of UI content to be rendered. We discovered a major problem causing power consumption upon a scrolling operation: The Android graphics pipeline renders all or a large portion of the content displayed most recently at a frame rate of nearly 60 fp
In this study, a glued-laminated timber (GLT) was reinforced with a steel plate and inclined screws, and its bending performance was analyzed. In a total of 8 GLTs, 3 GLTs were not reinforced (control group) and 5 GLTs were reinforced with steel plates (comparison group). The size of GLT was 80 mm (width) 120 mm (thickness) 2400 mm (length). The GLT in the comparison group, a steel plate (SPHC-P, yield strength: 227 MPa, modulus of elasticity 166.33 GPa) was installed with screws ( 9x160mm, 45).
In this paper, the partitioning/allocation model and algorithm for mapping object-oriented (OO) applications into the heterogeneous distributed environments are proposed. Our model applies the graph-theoretic approach, dealing with a lot of character
Mass timber construction has created a growing need for high-performance moment-resisting connections, particularly in tall building design. Although glued-in rod (GIR) connections provide superior strength and aesthetic benefits, their performance under combined loading poses significant challenges. This study presents an innovative moment connection system that strategically uncouples moment and shear resistance through the integration of GIRs and a dowelled connection. The proposed system emp
This study investigated a novel timber-concrete composite (TCC) slab system utilizing notched connections and nails in plywood units. The TCC slab system uses multiple plywood units with grooves, which are connected to timber laminae using common nails. It was developed to address the limitations of existing TCC slabs, where the use of existing mass timber products and conventional notched connections reduces their manufacturing efficiency. The TCC slab design has a hollow-core configuration whi
