Thyroid cancer is one of the most common cancers, with a global increase in incidence rate for both genders. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration is the current gold standard to diagnose thyroid cancers, but the results are inaccurate, leading to repeated biopsies and unnecessary surgeries. To reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies, we explored the use of multiparametric photoacoustic (PA) analysis in combination with the American Thyroid Association (ATA) Guideline (ATAP). In this study,
Functional photoacoustic imaging is a promising biological imaging technique that offers such unique benefits as scalable resolution and imaging depth, as well as the ability to provide functional information. At nanoscale, photoacoustic imaging has provided super-resolution images of the surface light absorption characteristics of materials and of single organelles in cells. At the microscopic and macroscopic scales. photoacoustic imaging techniques have precisely measured and quantified variou
In recent years, many methods have been investigated to improve imaging speed in photoacoustic microscopy (PAM). These methods mainly focused upon three critical factors contributing to fast PAM: laser pulse repetition rate, scanning speed, and computing power of the microprocessors. A high laser repetition rate is fundamentally the most crucial factor to increase the PAM speed. In this paper, we review methods adopted for fast PAM systems in detail, specifically with respect to light sources. T
Photoacoustic imaging is a non-invasive and non-ionizing biomedical technique that has been investigated widely for various clinical applications. By taking the advantages of conventional ultrasound imaging, hand-held operation with a linear array transducer should be favorable for successful clinical translation of photoacoustic imaging. In this paper, we present new key updates contributed to the previously developed real-time clinical photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging system for improving
Abstract Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) has gained significant attention over the last two decades as a noninvasive, nonionizing, real‐time, and inexpensive medical imaging modality. By exploiting the low acoustic scattering compared to optical scattering in biological tissues, PAI can achieve high resolution while maintaining superior optical contrast in deep tissues. PAI can probe many endogenous chromophores based on their strong optical absorption contrast, including oxygenated hemoglobin, deox
Photoacoustic imaging can be used to extract functional information at the molecular level for imaging the whole body of small animals in vivo . However, the use of a mechanical scanner to image the whole body involves acquiring the data for a period of time which can lead to breathing-related artifacts. Thus, the acquired three-dimensional data cannot be analyzed and visualized using two-dimensional projection rendering techniques unless the respiratory distortions are minimized. In this study,
Abstract Thyroid cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide, with a continuously increasing incidence rate in recent decades. Although ultrasonography, which is the current screening method in clinical workflows, has successfully triaged cancerous nodules for biopsy, overdiagnosis has also grown due to the relatively low specificity of the method. Studies are conducted to overcome this overdiagnosis issue by complementing ultrasonography with additional image‐based analysis t
Abstract Although efficient light delivery is required for various biomedical applications, the high stiffness of traditional silica‐based optical fibers limits their in vivo usage. In this study, highly deformable and stretchable soft optical fibers are prepared based on the mechanically tough hydrogels of a double network (DN) structure comprising covalently crosslinked acrylamide and ionically crosslinked alginate using a microfluidic device. Owing to the optimized chemical composition, the c
We demonstrate a novel scheme for a full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) system using a tunable-path-difference source (TPDS). Recently, the comb-spacing-swept source (CSWS) method, including TPDS, has been successfully applied to improve the stability of three-dimensional (3D) time-domain (TD)-FF-OCT imaging by eliminating the mechanical scanning of the reference path, which has been the main source of undesirable noise in general TD-OCT. However, CSWS-OCT has the drawback of a degr
We have successfully developed a real-time clinical photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging system which enables us to optimize the imaging parameters seamlessly. The system is greatly favorable for clinical research.
Thyroid cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the world. Ultrasonography and fine-needle aspiration biopsy are the typical standard-of-care method for diagnosing thyroid nodules. However, about 20% of fine-needle aspiration biopsies generate undeterminable results, which can lead to overdiagnosis and overtreatment. In this study, we propose photoacoustic imaging as an additional triaging tool for identifying cancerous nodules in vivo. We enrolled and photoacoustically imaged 28
Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a biomedical imaging method that can provide both structural and functional information of living tissues beyond the optical diffusion limit by combining the concepts of conventional optical and ultrasound imaging methods. Although endogenous chromophores can be utilized to acquire PA images of biological tissues, exogenous contrast agents that absorb near-infrared (NIR) lights have been extensively explored to improve the contrast and penetration depth of PA images
