We present all scalar-tensor Lagrangians that are cubic in second derivatives of a scalar field, and that are degenerate, hence avoiding Ostrogradsky instabilities. Thanks to the existence of constraints, they propagate no more than three degrees of freedom, despite having higher order equations of motion. We also determine the viable combinations of previously identified quadratic degenerate Lagrangians and the newly established cubic ones. Finally, we study whether the new theories are connect
We consider all degenerate scalar-tensor theories that depend quadratically on second-order derivatives of a scalar field, which we have identified in a previous work. These theories, whose degeneracy, in general, ensures the absence of Ostrogradsky's instability, include the quartic Horndeski Lagrangian and its quartic extension beyond Horndeski, as well as other Lagrangians. We study how all these theories transform under general disformal transformations and find that they can be separated in
We derive the general conditions for a large family of shift symmetry breaking degenerate higher order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories to admit stealth black hole solutions. Such black hole configurations correspond to vacuum solutions of general relativity and admit a scalar hair which does not gravitate, revealing itself only at the perturbative level. We focus our investigation on hairy Schwarzschild-(A)dS or pure Schwarzschild solutions, dressed with a linear time-dependent scalar hair, and a

We show that any static linear perturbations around Schwarzschild black holes enjoy a set of conserved charges which forms a centrally extended Schrodinger algebra sh(1) = sl(2, R) (sic) H. The central charge is given by the black hole mass, echoing results on black hole entropy from near-horizon diffeomorphism symmetry. The finite symmetry transformations generated by these conserved charges correspond to Galilean and conformal transformations of the static field and of the coordinates. This ne
Using self-dual Ashtekar variables, we investigate (at the effective level) the spherically symmetry reduced model of loop quantum gravity, both in vacuum and when coupled to a scalar field. Within the real Ashtekar-Barbero formulation, the system scalar field coupled to spherically symmetric gravity is known to possess a non closed (quantum) algebra of constraints once local (pointwise) holonomy corrections are introduced, which leads to several obstructions in the loop quantization of the mode
This article presents an effective quantum extension of the seminal Oppenheimer-Snyder (OS) collapse in which the singularity resolution is modeled using the effective dynamics of the spatially closed loop quantum cosmology. Imposing the minimal junction conditions, namely the Israel-Darmois conditions, we glue this bouncing Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) geometry to the classical vacuum exterior Schwarzschild geometry across a timelike thin shell. Consistency of the construction leads to several
In the context of loop quantum gravity (LQG), we study the fate of Thiemann complexifier in homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lemaitre-Roberston-Walker (FLRW) cosmology. The complexifier is the dilatation operator acting on the canonical phase space for gravity and generates the canonical transformations shifting the Barbero-Immirzi parameter. We focus on the closed algebra consisting in the complexifier, the 3d volume and the Hamiltonian constraint, which we call the CVH algebra (for Complexi

In this paper, we stress that the simplest cosmological model consisting in a massless scalar field minimally coupled to homogeneous and isotropic gravity has an built-in $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry. Protecting this symmetry naturally provides an efficient way to constrain the quantization of this cosmological system whatever the quantization scheme and allows one, in particular, to fix the quantization ambiguities arising in the canonical quantization program. Applying this method to t
In loop quantum cosmology, one has to make a choice of SU(2) irreducible representation in which to compute holonomies and regularize the curvature of the connection. The systematic choice made in the literature is to work in the fundamental representation, and very little is known about the physics associated with higher spin labels. This constitutes an ambiguity of which the understanding, we believe, is fundamental for connecting loop quantum cosmology to full theories of quantum gravity like
When applying the techniques of loop quantum gravity (LQG) to symmetry-reduced gravitational systems, one first regularizes the scalar constraint using holonomy corrections, prior to quantization. In inhomogeneous system, where a residual spatial diffeomorphism symmetry survives, such modification of the gauge generator generating time reparametrization can potentially lead to deformations or anomalies in the modified algebra of first-class constraints. When working with self-dual variables, it
We study the role of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and the choice of connection in the construction of (a symmetry-reduced version of) loop quantum gravity. We start with the four-dimensional Lorentzian Holst action that we reduce to three dimensions in a way that preserves the presence of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. In the time gauge, the phase space of the resulting three-dimensional theory mimics exactly that of the four-dimensional one. Its quantization can be performed, and
