The study of social networks in activity-travel research has recently gained momentum because social activities and social influence were relatively poorly explained in activity-based models of travel demand. Over the last decade, many scholars have shown interest in identifying personal social networks that constitute an important source of explanation of activity-travel behaviour. This paper seeks to review two research streams: social networks and activity-travel behaviour, and social influen
Hybrid choice models have been developed as an extension of discrete choice models, particularly multinomial logit models, in an attempt to include attitudinal variables. The quintessence of hybrid choice models is that a model of attitude formation is estimated and the estimated attitudes are added to the commonly used set of attributes in discrete choice models: attributes of the choice alternatives and socio-demographic variables. The most commonly applied model is based on linear specificati
The hybrid choice model (HCM) provides a powerful framework to account for heterogeneity across decision-makers in terms of different underlying latent attitudes. Typically, effects of the latent attitudes have been represented assuming linear utility functions. In contributing to the further elaboration of HCMs, this study suggests an extended HCM framework allowing for nonlinear utility functions of choice alternatives including not only observed but also latent variables. Ecofriendly transportation systems have attracted a great deal of attention in many cities. Seoul, South Korea, plans to construct a new 30-km water transit system on the Han River, which flows through the city center. Although the new system is appealing to policy makers, uncertainty for various stakeholders should be minimized in order to complete the system successfully. The objectives of this study were to understand the types of uncertainty, to identify primary factors related to uncertaint
Understanding cultural norms may enable health care providers to look below the surface even though caregivers may not express problems.
This paper investigates stated preferences for car-sharing in the context of travel mode choice under conditions of uncertain travel times. In particular, the study focuses on heterogeneity in the decision-making process due to different activity-travel contexts such as time pressure, activity duration, and uncertain travel times. It is assumed that the contextual factors influence the decision rules that potential users adopt regarding the use of a shared car for a specific trip purpose. A cont
