These findings suggest that NGS is an accurate diagnostic tool to differentiate causes of INS because diagnostic tests, such as electroretinography and optical coherence tomography, are not easily applicable in young infants. Accurate application of NGS using a standardized, stepwise, team-based approach in early childhood not only facilitated early molecular diagnosis but also led to improved personalized management in patients with INS.
NGS is a useful diagnostic tool with great utility for patients with EOE. Diagnostic yields can be maximized with a standardized and team-based approach.
Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily q member 4 (KCNQ4) is a voltage-gated potassium channel that plays essential roles in maintaining ion homeostasis and regulating hair cell membrane potential. Reduction of the activity of the KCNQ4 channel owing to genetic mutations is responsible for nonsyndromic hearing loss, a typically late-onset, initially high-frequency loss progressing over time. In addition, variants of KCNQ4 have also been associated with noise-induced hearing loss and age-relat
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is frequently estimated using the empirical Friedewald equation. We compared the accuracy of the novel equation named as the 180-cell method (180-c), which estimates LDL-C using a stratification approach, to those of 9 previously suggested formulas, including the Friedewald equation. We compared the accuracy of 10 equations by calculating intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and weighted kappa index in relation to direct LDL-C measurement values. While pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is recognized as the gold standard method for clonality analysis, MALDI-TOF MS has recently been spotlighted as an alternative tool for species identification. Herein, we compared the dendrograms of multi-drug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii isolates by using MALDI-TOF MS with those by using PFGE. We used direct colony and protein extraction methods for MALDI-TOF MS dendrograms. The isolates with identical PFGE patterns were grouped into diff
Ski-slope hearing loss (HL), which refers to increased auditory threshold at high frequencies, is common in adults. However, genetic contributions to this post-lingual HL remain largely unknown. Here, we prospectively investigated deafness-associated and novel candidate genes causing ski-slope HL. We analyzed 192 families with post-lingual HL via gene panel and/or exome sequencing. With an overall molecular diagnostic rate of 35.4% (68/192) in post-lingual HL, ski-slope HL showed a lower diagnos
AdvanSure Allostation Smart II and PROTIA Allergy-Q presented favorable agreement performances with RIDA Allergy Screen, although positive propensities were noticed in common allergens.
There has been controversy regarding the clinical utility of fecal occult blood test (FOBT) as a screening tool for colorectal cancer (CRC) in the general population. The purpose of this study was to examine the results of Korea national CRC screening using FOBT from 2006 to 2013 and to evaluate the implementation of the program. We analyzed the results of FOBT, colonoscopy, and the side effects during colonoscopy for the subjects (n = 20,609,909) from the Korea National Health Insurance Cancer
As the number of genes identified for linkage to hearing loss has been increasing and more public databases have become available, we aimed to systematically evaluate all variants reported for nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL) based on their allele frequencies (AFs) in the general population. Among the 3,549 variants in 97 NSHL genes reported as pathogenic/likely pathogenic in ClinVar and HGMD, 1,618 were found in public databases (gnomAD, ExAC, EVS, and 1000G). To evaluate the pathogenicity of t
As patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) often present coagulopathy depending on disease severity, appropriate prevention and treatment for haemodynamics control are most essential for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) management.1 Although several papers warned that, as expected, there was a decrease in the number of blood donations in the COVID-19 pandemic,2, 3 few studies investigated the actual prevalence of blood transfusions requested in hosp

The proportion of TEM-135 PPNG has continuously increased since 2012, in association with clonal spread. The difference at position 18 of the TEM-135 sequence can be interpreted as the existence of multiple clonal complexes. The possibility that TEM-135 was acquired via foreign plasmids requires careful follow-up and continuous monitoring of TEM-135 to ascertain whether it constitutes a step towards evolutionary change.
The 4q deletion syndrome is a rare disorder, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 1000001 and approximately 150 patients have been reported globally.2 With common clinical presentations with craniofacial dysmorphism, cardiac and skeletal defects, growth failure and developmental delay, wide spectrum of phenotypes in 4q deletion syndrome patients have been described in correlations with deletion size, genes and genomic environment of the affected region.2 Array-comparative genomic hybridization (a
