Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is a rare but life-threatening mucocutaneous disease mediated by paraneoplastic autoimmunity. Various neoplasms are associated with PNP. Intractable stomatitis and polymorphous cutaneous eruptions, including blisters and lichenoid dermatitis, are characteristic clinical features caused by humoral and cell-mediated autoimmune reactions. Autoreactive T cells and IgG autoantibodies against heterogeneous antigens, including plakin family proteins and desmosomal cadheri
Central pain is neuropathic pain resulting from a lesion of the CNS, such as a stroke [poststroke central pain (CPSP)]. Lesions involving the posterior thalamus lead to reduction or loss of sensation and to CPSP, although the responsible nuclei have not been identified. We now examine the hypotheses that thalamic lesions must extend posterior to the ventral caudal nucleus (Vc) and include ventral medial posterior nucleus (VMpo), to result in loss of cold sensibility and CPSP. Patients with small
New derivatives of monascus pigment were produced during Monascus fermentation by the addition of unnatural amino acids, and the inhibitory activities of the derivatives against diet-related lipase and alpha-glucosidase were tested. Derivatives with penicillamine (H-Pen), cyclohexylalanine (H-Cha), butylglycine (L-t-Bg), and norleucine (H-Nle) showed relatively high inhibitory activities against lipase. The H-Pen derivative exhibited the highest inhibitory activity, with an IC(50) (50% inhibitio
We conclude that three or more infusions of rituximab are more effective than two infusions for the treatment of pemphigus.
Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) is a chronic autoimmune subepidermal bullous disease with clinical features similar to the genetic form of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. EBA is characterized by the presence of autoantibodies against type VII collagen which is a major component of the anchoring fibrils at the dermal-epidermal junction. EBA can be divided into two main clinical types; mechanobullous and inflammatory EBA. Mechanobullous EBA, referred to as classic EBA, presents with skin f
Type VII collagen ELISA using the NC1 and NC2 domains is useful for diagnosing EBA and monitoring disease severity.
Abstract Postoperative neck scarring is a major concern for patients who undergo thyroid surgery; however, the treatments for hypertrophic scars are generally considered by patients to provide unsatisfactory outcomes. Therefore, risk factors should be identified and prevention of these factors is considered to be critical in management. We reviewed the medical records of 96 thyroidectomy patients who were divided into two groups based on scar type: patients with hypertrophic ( n = 61) and linear
