These findings support the hypothesis that air pollution at levels below the current standards of Korea is harmful to sensitive subjects such as asthmatic children.
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Under the present effort to decrease of air pollution, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are appeared and developed. EVs are running by using electrical energy resource by supporting of battery packs. The effect of air-conditioning has proven to be a serious problem to the point of battery depleting. Thus in the present study, effects of air conditioning (i.e., cooling and heating) on driving range were studied for various driving m
An increasing number of studies have suggested benefits of greenness exposure on mental health. We examined the association between urban greenness and depressive symptoms in adults in the general population living in the seven major cities in Korea (<i>N</i> = 65,128). Using data from the Korean Community Health Survey 2009, depressive symptoms were measured on the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Greenness was assessed using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (N
The objective of this study is to see whether there were any health benefits of mitigated air pollution concentration due to reduced traffic flow during a citywide intervention for the 2002 Summer Asian Games. Relative risks of hospitalization for childhood asthma during the post-Asian Game period compared with the baseline period were estimated using a time-series analysis of the generalized additive Poisson model. Fourteen consecutive days of traffic volume control in Busan during the Games re
There is increased evidence that air pollution may be associated with cardiovascular disease. The authors' prior investigations on the association between air pollution exposure and stroke mortality led to the current study, which was conducted to assess the effects of ambient air pollution on ischemic cardiovascular diseases among the elderly population (i.e., males and females 64+ yr of age) in Seoul, Korea. The authors estimated the relative risks of hospitalization associated with an interqu
The authors evaluated whether the effects of air pollution on asthma in children differed by the regional socioeconomic status (SES) associated with the area in which children resided. They analyzed data on air pollution, asthma-related hospitalization, weather conditions, and SES collected from 25 subregions in Seoul from January 1 to December 31, 2002. The National Health Insurance Cooperation provided data for children aged younger than 15 years who were living in Seoul and hospitalized for a
The objective of this study was to estimate the association between ambient ozone levels and hospitalization for asthma/atopic dermatitis among children younger than 15 years old living in Seoul and Ulsan, Korea, in the years 2004-2005. Estimated relative risks of hospital admissions associated with an interquartile range (IQR) increase in ozone concentration were calculated using a generalized additive Poisson model. For childhood asthma, the effect of an ozone increase on the relative risks in
Lag is one of the major uncertainties in the heterogeneity of short-term effects of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <10 μm (PM10) on mortality. This study aimed to explore spatial variations in extended lag effects of PM10 on all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality and respiratory mortality in seven major South Korean cities over a period spanning 2006-2013. We did time-series analysis using generalized linear models and adjusted for temporal trend, day o
There is a growing body of literature on the adverse health effects of ambient air pollution. Children are more adversely affected by air pollution due to their biological susceptibility and exposure patterns. This review summarized the accumulated epidemiologic evidence with emphasis on studies conducted in Korea and heterogeneity in the literature. Based on systematic reviews and meta-analyses, there is consistent evidence on the association between exposure to ambient air pollution and childr
