The adsorption equilibria of CO2 on zeolite 13X and zeolite X/activated carbon composite (Zeocarbon) were measured by a static volumetric method. The equilibrium experiments were conducted at (273.15, 293.15, 313.15, 333.15, and 353.15) K and at pressures up to 102.0 kPa for zeolite 13X and 99.7 kPa for Zeocarbon. The experimental data obtained were correlated by the Toth, UNILAN, and Sips models, which are generally used for microporous adsorbents such as zeolites and activated carbon. The isos
This paper examines the conditions under which exploration of a new, incompatible technologyis conducive to firm growth in the presence of network externalities. In particular, this study is motivated by the divergent evolutions of the PC and the workstation markets in response to a new technology: reduced instruction set computing (RISC). In the PC market, Intel has developed new microprocessors by maintaining compatibility with the established architecture, whereas it was radically replaced by
With the advances in understanding perceptual properties of the human visual system and constructing their computational models, efforts toward incorporating human perceptual mechanisms in video compression to achieve maximal perceptual quality have received great attention. This paper thoroughly reviews the recent advances of perceptual video compression mainly in terms of the three major components, namely, perceptual model definition, implementation of coding, and performance evaluation. Furt
We have previously shown that mouse microglial cells undergo apoptosis upon inflammatory activation and that nitric oxide (NO) is the major autocrine mediator in this process (Lee, P., Lee, J., Kim, S., Yagita, H., Lee, M. S., Kim, S. Y., Kim, H., and Suk, K. (2001) Brain Res. 892, 380-385). Here, we present evidence that interferon regulatory factor-1 (IRF-1) and caspase-11 are the essential molecules in activation-induced cell death of microglial cells. The apoptogenic action of inflammatory s
Scalable video coding is a powerful solution for content delivery in many interactive multimedia services due to its adaptability to varying terminal and network constraints. In order to successfully exploit such adaptability, it is necessary to understand users' preference among various scalability options and consequently develop an optimal bit rate adaptation strategy. In this paper, we present a study of subjective quality assessment of scalable video coding, which investigates the influence
Scalability is a powerful concept for adaptive video content delivery to many end users having heterogeneous and dynamic characteristics of networks and devices. In order to maximize users' quality of experience by selecting appropriate combinations of multiple scalability parameters, it is crucial to understand and model the relationship between multidimensional scalability and perceived quality. In this article, we address the latest advances in subjective and objective quality evaluation of m
This paper investigates the influence of the combination of the scalability parameters in scalable video coding (SVC) schemes on the subjective visual quality. We aim at providing guidelines for an adaptation strategy of SVC that can select the optimal scalability options for resource-constrained networks. Extensive subjective tests are conducted by using two different scalable video codecs and high definition contents. The results are analyzed with respect to five dimensions, namely, codec, con
Electromagnetic wave surface velocimeters (ESVs) measure the Doppler shift in electromagnetic waves reflected from the water surface. They provide nonintrusive water surface velocity measurements from bridges and river banks. Comparisons with laboratory and field tests show very good agreement over a wide range of elevation and planview angles. Laboratory testing shows comparable results between ESV and other measurement techniques when 0.4<V<1.6m∕s and 15<θ<45° . Field testing at three differen
This paper investigates the issue of designing paired comparison-based subjective quality assessment experiments for reliable results. In particular, the convergence behavior of the quality scores estimated from paired comparison results is considered. Via an extensive computer simulation experiment, the estimation performance in terms of the root mean squared error, the rank order correlation coefficient, and the change of the estimated scores with respect to the number of subjects are mathemat
