The incidence and prevalence of PD in Korea were higher in women and increased gradually from 2010 to 2015. The findings may contribute to epidemiological studies of PD in Asia, and may provide clues on risk factors for PD.
disease Parkinson disease stroke P arkinson disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and affects 1% to 3% of people aged >65 years. As life expectancy increases, the prevalence and burden of PD increase worldwide. Although epidemiologic studies have consistently reported high PD-associated mortality, 2 the relationship between PD and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the leading cause of death, remains unclear. CVDs, such as myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke, and
NAFLD may be an independent, modifiable risk factor for young-onset digestive tract cancers. Our findings suggest a crucial opportunity to reduce premature morbidity and mortality associated with young-onset digestive tract cancers in the next generation.
Lower HDL-C level and greater HDL-C variability were associated with a higher incidence of PD.
The association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the risk of pancreatic cancer in the general population remains unclear. This nationwide cohort study included 8,120,674 adults who underwent a national health screening in 2009 from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Participants were followed-up until December 2017 for the development of pancreatic cancer. NAFLD was assessed using the fatty liver index: ≥ 60, NAFLD and < 30, no NAFLD. Multivariable Cox pr
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and mortality in the elderly. This study was a nation-wide population-based retrospective cohort study of the National Health Insurance System-Senior Database (NHIS-SD). In this study, a total of 75,856 subjects were identified and selected from among 251,593 individuals aged ≥ 65 years who underwent health screening at least once between 2009 and 2012 and who had no history of diabetes, cardiovascular
The risk of osteoporotic fracture increased with the duration of PPI use, especially when PPI was used for ≥1 year and regularly in the recent 1 year.
The CN-PJI group after total hip arthroplasty could be treated successfully by two-stage exchange arthroplasty without any complications. Clinical course and prognosis of CN-PJI group was also better compared with that of CP-PJI group. Therefore, culture negativity of PJI cannot be always a poor prognostic factor for the treatment.
Even light-to-moderate alcohol consumption was associated with an increased risk of BTC in individuals with prediabetes and diabetes, but not in normoglycemic individuals. Complete avoidance of alcohol consumption may help reduce the risk of BTC in patients with prediabetes and diabetes, suggesting the need for individualized prevention strategies for BTC.
Pancreatic cancer risk synergistically increased in current smokers with diabetes and prediabetes. However, smoking cessation reduced the synergistically increased risk of pancreatic cancer to the level of never-smokers, especially when smoking history was <20 pack-years. More individualized and intensive cancer prevention education should be underscored for individuals at an increased risk of pancreatic cancer beyond the one-size-fits-all approach.
Elevation of PTH, unlike vitamin D, is independently associated with COPD severity, and may be a better biomarker for COPD.
