Believable proxies of human behavior can empower interactive applications ranging from immersive environments to rehearsal spaces for interpersonal communication to prototyping tools. In this paper, we introduce generative agents--computational software agents that simulate believable human behavior. Generative agents wake up, cook breakfast, and head to work; artists paint, while authors write; they form opinions, notice each other, and initiate conversations; they remember and reflect on days
Social computing prototypes probe the social behaviors that may arise in an envisioned system design. This prototyping practice is currently limited to recruiting small groups of people. Unfortunately, many challenges do not arise until a system is populated at a larger scale. Can a designer understand how a social system might behave when populated, and make adjustments to the design before the system falls prey to such challenges? We introduce social simulacra, a prototyping technique that gen
This letter presents a position sensorless control method of brushless dc (BLDC) motors considering unbalanced zero-crossing detection of back electromotive force (back EMF). The zero-crossing point (ZCP) of back EMF voltage is detected by comparing the dc-link voltage with the back EMF voltage. The unbalanced ZCP detection is caused by the dc-link voltage drop, dc-link offset voltage, and a motor having asymmetric back EMFs. Because the sensorless BLDC motor control is based on unbalanced ZCP d
With computational algorithms making an increasing number of deeply consequential, and often problematic judgments on our behalf, there is a growing interest in slowing down technology to encourage users to reflect on judgments made by algorithms. Prior work in slow technology has established slowness as an agent of reflection and serendipity; however, it has been unclear whether this waiting time actually helps users gain useful insight or any other benefits as they make judgments using an algo
A novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method for a wave energy converter is proposed. The output power can be expressed as a product of excitation force and wave speed. Therefore, the condition for maximum extraction of wave energy is ensuring that excitation force is in phase with the velocity of the buoy. However, the phase between excitation force and velocity is determined by the wave period. In the ocean, a wave has an irregular period and amplitude of wave position. In this paper, th
AI technology offers opportunities to expand virtual and physical access for people with disabilities. However, an important part of bringing these opportunities to fruition is ensuring that upcoming AI technology works well for people with a wide range of abilities. In this paper, we identify the lack of data from disabled populations as one of the challenges to training and benchmarking fair and inclusive AI systems. As a potential solution, we envision an online infrastructure that can enable
This letter presents an improved approach for high performance operation of brushless dc (BLDC) motors with hall sensors. The hall sensors in BLDC motors are ideally placed 120 electrical degrees apart. However, hall sensor placement may be significantly incorrect, particularly in high-pole and small-sized motors. These misaligned hall sensors can cause serious torque ripple, and it can be difficult to apply advanced angle control. Therefore, a position error compensator is needed before an adva
RAC prolonged hemofilter survival, displaying an economical benefit without severe adverse effects. The present study therefore demonstrates that RAC, using commercially available solutions, may be advantageous over SAH as a cost-effective treatment in CRRT.
Our findings suggest that the interaction between a high salt diet and elevated TGs may exert synergistic biological effects on the risk of hypertension.
A diverse representation of different demographic groups in AI training data sets is important in ensuring that the models will work for a large range of users. To this end, recent efforts in AI fairness and inclusion have advocated for creating AI data sets that are well-balanced across race, gender, socioeconomic status, and disability status. In this paper, we contribute to this line of work by focusing on the representation of age by asking whether older adults are represented proportionally
This paper presents an improved approach for compensating rotor position signal displacement in brushless DC (BLDC) motors with misaligned hall-effect sensors. Typically, the hall-effect sensors in BLDC motors are located in each phase and positioned exactly 120 electrical degrees apart. However, limitations in mechanical tolerances make it difficult to place hall-effect sensors at the correct location. In this paper, a position error compensator to counteract the hall-effect sensor positioning
[Purpose] The aim of this study was to examine whether a systematic high intensity aerobic exercise on treadmill was effective in improving pulmonary function. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects of this study were 22 healthy elderly women over 65 years of age who were attending the Senior Welfare Center and Social Welfare Center programs in B city. For the pulmonary function test, a spirometry (Pony FX, COSMED Inc., Italy) was used. The item for measurement of pulmonary function in elderly wome
With increasing attention to online anti-social behaviors such as personal attacks and bigotry, it is critical to have an accurate accounting of how widespread anti-social behaviors are. In this paper, we empirically measure the prevalence of anti-social behavior in one of the world's most popular online community platforms. We operationalize this goal as measuring the proportion of unmoderated comments in the 97 most popular communities on Reddit that violate eight widely accepted platform norm

Because of the advantage of high efficiency and high density, interest in brushless DC motors and drives is increasing. Unlike DC mot
Our findings demonstrate that strict dietary salt restriction delays the progress of renal inflammation and fibrosis in proteinuric kidney disease, most likely via relieving the reactive oxygen species-mediated NF-κB activation.
