Keloid is an abnormal fibrotic disease after cutaneous injury characterized by exaggerated scar tissue formation, which often extends beyond the boundaries of the original wound. Although chronic inflammation is known to be associated with the excessive inflammation in keloid tissue, there are few studies on the role of autophagy in the pathogenesis of keloid. In this study, we evaluated the pattern of autophagy in keloid fibroblasts (KF) and normal fibroblasts (NF). Expression of HIF-1α, STAT3
The molecular chaperone heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) plays a vital role in cellular processes, including protein folding and assembly, and helps prevent aggregation under physiological and stress-related conditions. Although the structural changes undergone by full-length client proteins upon interaction with DnaK (i.e., Escherichia coli Hsp70) are fundamental to understand chaperone-mediated protein folding, these changes are still largely unexplored. Here, we show that multiple conformations
The effects of tempering temperature on wear resistance and surface roughness of a high speed steel (HSS) roll manufactured by centrifugal casting method were investigated in this study. Hot-rolling simulation test was carried out using a high-temperature wear tester capable of controlling speed, load, and temperature. The test results revealed that the peak-tempered roll specimen showed the best wear resistance because of its hard matrix. However, its surface roughness deteriorated as the scrat
Abstract The pathogenesis of keloids has not been elucidated, and the disease is thought to be caused by abnormal secretion of proinflammatory mediators and irregular responses to other inflammatory signals mediated by keloid fibroblasts (KFs). In this study, we investigated whether a local increase in interleukin IL-17 in keloid tissues stimulates the production of stromal cell–derived factor-1 (SDF-1) in KFs causing further recruitment of IL-17-producing T helper 17 (Th17) cells, which subsequ
The objectives of this study were to investigate periodontal treatment and referral patterns and the considerations used in the process of dentists who make no periodontal referrals, relatively few referrals, or more referrals. Specifically, the role of disease characteristics, patient- and provider-related factors, attitudes towards periodontal referrals, and perceptions of dental education were explored. The relationships between the perceived quality of dental education concerning periodontal
NMR is a powerful yet intrinsically insensitive technique. The applicability of NMR to chemical and biological systems would be substantially extended by new approaches going beyond current signal-to-noise capabilities. Here, we exploit the large enhancements arising from (13)C photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization ((13)C photo-CIDNP) in solution to improve biomolecular NMR sensitivity in the context of heteronuclear correlation spectroscopy. The (13)C-PRINT pulse sequence present
Obesity is associated with the risk of developing several severe diseases, such as metabolic disorder, diabetes, and heart diseases. Despite wide investigation and trials, a noninvasive obesity therapy is still an important medical unmet need, targeting the abnormal adipose tissue. Here, we developed hyaluronate-hollow gold nanosphere-adipocyte-targeting peptide (HA-HAuNS-ATP) conjugates for the photothermal ablation of adipose tissues. The HA-HAuNS-ATP conjugate could be noninvasively delivered
The use of tissue mimics in vivo, including patterned vascular networks, is expected to facilitate the regeneration of functional tissues and organs with large volumes. Maintaining patency of channels in contact with blood is an important issue in the development of a functional vascular network. Endothelium is the only known completely non-thrombogenic material; however, results from treatments to induce endothelialization are inconclusive. The present study was designed to evaluate the clinica
Three-bond (3)J(C'C') and (3)J(HNHα) couplings in peptides and proteins are functions of the intervening backbone torsion angle ϕ. In well-ordered regions, (3)J(HNHα) is tightly correlated with (3)J(C'C'), but the presence of large ϕ angle fluctuations differentially affects the two types of couplings. Assuming the ϕ angles follow a Gaussian distribution, the width of this distribution can be extracted from (3)J(C'C') and (3)J(HNHα), as demonstrated for the folded proteins ubiquitin and GB3. In
NMR is an extremely powerful, yet insensitive technique. Many available nuclear polarization methods that address sensitivity are not directly applicable to low-concentration biomolecules in liquids and are often too invasive. Photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (photo-CIDNP) is no exception. It needs high-power laser irradiation, which often leads to sample degradation, and photosensitizer reduction. Here, we introduce a novel tri-enzyme system that significantly overcomes the
This study investigates the hysteresis phenomena of the permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMASynRM) using coupled FEM and Preisach modelling. Preisach's model, which allows accurate prediction of hysteresis, is adopted in this procedure to provide a nonlinear solution. The computer simulation and experimental results for the i-/spl lambda/ loci show the propriety of the proposed method.
This study investigates the dynamic characteristics of synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM), with segmental rotor structure, using finite element method in which the moving mesh technique is considered. The focus of this paper is the general property and speed response characteristic of SynRM under saturation and iron loss. Extensive experimental work has been conducted to verify the accuracy of proposed analysis method.
Recently, injectable dermal fillers have become important alternatives to surgical procedures for the correction of facial wrinkles. Bovine collagen is the first approved material for filler injection, and several studies have shown its efficacy. However, the risk of developing an allergic reaction and xenogenic transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy remain among its disadvantages. In this randomized, double-blinded, split-face study, we compared the efficacy and safety of a porcine co
