유역과 갯벌 등 극한 환경에서 분리된 미생물을 대상으로 한 고유의 미생물 분리 및 분류 연구를 중심으로, 특히 염도, 온도, pH 등 다양한 환경 스트레스에 내성을 가진 미생물의 생태학적 특성과 생화학적 메커니즘을 규명하고 있습니다. 또한, 이러한 극한미생물에서 유래한 효소(예: 립라아제)의 특성과 응용 가능성을 탐색하며, 암 발생과 관련된 유전자 메틸화 및 돌연변이 메커니즘을 미생물학적 관점에서 분석하고 있습니다. 특히 한국 전통 발효식품과 해안 생태계에서 발견된 미생물의 다양성과 기능적 특성을 중심으로 기초 및 응용 연구를 융합하고 있습니다.

Two Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming and moderately halophilic cocci (strains YKJ-103T and YKJ-105) were isolated from the traditional Korean fermented seafood, jeotgal. Two gram-negative, motile, non-spore-forming, yellow-pigmented and slightly halophilic strains (SW-46T and SW-52) were isolated from sea water of the East Sea, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. A bacterial strain which is able to degrade pyridine was previously isolated from the oxic zone of an oil shale column and described as Pimelobacter sp. strain OS4T.
