Abstract Multivariate data analyses were performed with the hydrochemical data from a small area in Incheon, Korea. Previous studies based on hydrogeological and hydrochemical observations proposed that the ground water hydrochemical system of the site is governed by two distinct hydrochemical regimes. Each of the two regimes governs a ground water zone, zones A and B. The ground water in zone A is characterized by confined aquifer conditions and low values of dissolved oxygen (DO), NO 3 − , SO
The Pohang quake shows the need for new methods to assess and manage evolving risk
A shallow-depth ground water area was investigated to identify the dominant processes governing the distribution of hydrocarbon contaminants and hydrogeochemical parameters. The ground water in the study site has been highly contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. A preliminary pump-and-treatment remediation technology was applied for 4 yr at the site. Multivariate analyses were applied to hydrogeochemical data obtained before and after the rainy season. The pump-and-treatment application, ind
Pumping and slug tests are widely used, relatively simple methods for estimating hydraulic conductivity and storage coefficient. This study tested the reproducibility of pumping and slug tests in estimating aquifer parameters in fractured or fractured porous media. The continuum concept is applied to represent the hydraulic properties by the conventional conductivity and storage coefficient. Repeated tests show discrepancies wider than can be attributed to probable measurement errors or incomple
This study compares saturated hydraulic conductivities ( K s ) of three sandy soils such as coarse, medium and fine sand. The K s was obtained using three different methods: empirical methods based on the grain size analysis, the relative effective porosity model (REPM), and breakthrough curve analyses based on tracer tests. Column drainage tests were performed to characterize the water retention properties of the samples, which are required in the REPM. Bench scale tracer tests with various con
A framed-tube system with multiple internal tubes is analyzed using an orthotropic box beam analogy approach in which each tube is individually modeled by a box beam that accounts for the flexural and shear deformations as well as the shear-lag effects. The method idealizes the tubes-in-tube structure as a system of equivalent multiple tubes, each composed of four equivalent orthotropic plate panels capable of carrying axial loads and shear forces. By simplifying the assumptions in relation to t
Abstract Spatial and temporal variations in a trichloroethylene (TCE) plume at an industrial complex in Wonju, Korea, were examined based on hydrogeological data and seven rounds of groundwater quality data collected over a year. The site has considerable vertical heterogeneities; the top layer of soil is covered by impermeable paving material at several locations, followed by a series of reclaimed or residual soil layers, and with weathered rocks to the crystalline biotite granite at the bottom
