We investigate the D→4 limit of the D-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where the limit is taken with α˜=(D−4)α kept fixed and α is the original Gauss-Bonnet coupling. Using the ADM decomposition in D dimensions, we clarify that the limit is rather subtle and ambiguous (if not ill-defined) and depends on the way how to regularize the Hamiltonian or/and the equations of motion. To find a consistent theory in 4 dimensions that is different from general relativity, the regularization needs
We consider the possibility that the massive graviton is a viable candidate for dark matter in the context of bimetric gravity. We first derive the energy-momentum tensor of the massive graviton and show that it indeed behaves as that of dark matter fluid. We then discuss a production mechanism and the present abundance of massive gravitons as dark matter. Since the metric to which ordinary matter fields couple is a linear combination of the two mass eigenstates of bigravity, production of massi
In a very recent paper [1], we have proposed a novel 4-dimensional gravitational theory with two dynamical degrees of freedom, which serves as a consistent realization of D→4 Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the rescaled Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant ̃α. This has been made possible by breaking a part of diffeomorphism invariance, and thus is consistent with the Lovelock theorem. In the present paper, we study cosmological implications of the theory in the presence of a perfect fluid and clari
We reveal the existence of a certain hidden symmetry in general ghost-free scalar-tensor theories which can only be seen when generalizing the geometry of the spacetime from Riemannian. For this purpose, we study scalar-tensor theories in the metric-affine (Palatini) formalism of gravity, which we call scalar-metric-affine theories for short, where the metric and the connection are independent. We show that the projective symmetry, a local symmetry under a shift of the connection, can provide a
Assuming static and spherically symmetric spacetimes in the ghost-free bigravity theory, we find a relativistic star solution, which is very close to that in general relativity. The coupling constants are classified into two classes: Class [I] and Class [II]. Although the Vainshtein screening mechanism is found in the weak gravitational field for both classes, we find that there is no regular solution beyond the critical value of the compactness in Class [I]. This implies that the maximum mass o
We study canonical transformations of general relativity (GR) to provide a novel matter coupling to gravity. Although the transformed theory is equivalent to GR in vacuum, the equivalence no longer holds if a matter field minimally couples to the canonically transformed gravitational field. We find that a naive matter coupling to the transformed field leads to the appearance of an extra mode in the phase space, rendering the theory inconsistent. We then find a consistent and novel way of matter
We study the origin of dark matter based on the ghost-free bigravity theory with twin matter fluids. The present cosmic acceleration can be explained by the existence of graviton mass, while dark matter is required in several cosmological situations (the galactic missing mass, the cosmic structure formation and the cosmic microwave background observation). Assuming that the Compton wavelength of the massive graviton is shorter than a galactic scale, we show the bigravity theory can explain dark
We study coherently oscillating massive gravitons in the ghost-free bigravity theory. This coherent field can be interpreted as a condensate of the massive gravitons. We first define the effective energy-momentum tensor of the coherent massive gravitons in a curved spacetime. We then study the background dynamics of the Universe and the cosmic structure formation including the effects of the coherent massive gravitons. We find that the condensate of the massive graviton behaves as a dark matter
We study compatibility of the standard model of particle physics and general relativity by means of gravitational positivity bounds, which provide a necessary condition for a low-energy gravitational theory to be UV completable within the weakly coupled regime of gravity. In particular, we identify the cutoff scale of the standard model coupled to gravity by studying consistency of light-by-light scattering. While the precise value depends on details of the Pomeron effects in QCD, the cutoff sca
Abstract We study the phenomenology of a class of minimally modified gravity theories called $$f(\mathcal {H})$$ f ( H ) theories, in which the usual general relativistic Hamiltonian constraint is replaced by a free function of it. After reviewing the construction of the theory and a consistent matter coupling, we analyze the dynamics of
We study the stability of a spherically symmetric perturbation around the flat Friedmann--Lema\^{\i}tre--Robertson--Walker spacetime in the ghost-free bigravity theory, retaining nonlinearities of the helicity-0 mode of the massive graviton. It has been known that, when the graviton mass is smaller than the Hubble parameter, homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes suffer from the Higuchi-type ghost or the gradient instability against the linear perturbation in the bigravity. Hence, the bigravity th
We study scalar-tensor theories respecting the projective invariance in the metric-affine formalism. The metric-affine formalism is a formulation of gravitational theories such that the metric and the connection are independent variables in the first place. In this formalism, the Einstein-Hilbert action has an additional invariance, called the projective invariance, under a shift of the connection. Respecting this invariance for the construction of the scalar-tensor theories, we find that the Ga
We study dynamics of Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime based on the ghost-free bigravity theory. Assuming the coupling parameters guaranteeing the existence of de Sitter space as well as Minkowski spacetime, we find two stable attractors for spacetime with ``twin'' dust matter fields: One is de Sitter accelerating universe and the other is matter dominated universe. Although a considerable number of initial data leads to de Sitter universe, we also find matter dominated u
It has been argued that a self-interacting massive vector field is pathological due to a dynamical formation of a singular effective metric of the vector field, which is the onset of a gradient or ghost instability. We discuss that this singularity formation is not necessarily a fundamental problem but a breakdown of the effective field theory (EFT) description of the massive vector field. By using a model of ultraviolet (UV) completion of the massive vector field, we demonstrate that a Proca st
In a very recent paper [1], we have proposed a novel $4$-dimensional gravitational theory with two dynamical degrees of freedom, which serves as a consistent realization of $D\to4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the rescaled Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $\tildeα$. This has been made possible by breaking a part of diffeomorphism invariance, and thus is consistent with the Lovelock theorem. In the present paper, we study cosmological implications of the theory in the presence of a perfect fl
