Objective/Background The degree of a patient's absorption in tasks as a measure of rehabilitation effectiveness has yet to be studied. The objective of this study is to develop a scale that can measure a patient's flow state in a clinical situation such as occupational therapy (OT). Methods The final 14 items were determined from the comprehensive assessment of item analysis results by a preliminary experiment. A total of 240 participants engaged in computer games that induced three psychologica
Focused attention meditation (FAM) is a basic meditation practice that cultivates attentional control and monitoring skills. Cross-sectional studies have highlighted high cognitive performance and discriminative neural activity in experienced meditators. However, a direct relationship between neural activity changes and improvement of attention caused by meditation training remains to be elucidated. To investigate this, we conducted a longitudinal study, which evaluated the results of electroenc
Attention training with induction of the flow was associated with greater improvement of attention. The results of this study may provide provisional evidence of the effectiveness of rehabilitation considering the patient's psychological state.
Objective/Background Flow is the holistic experience that occurs when an individual acts with total involvement. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of attention training that induces flow experience for patients with attention-deficit disorder after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods A two-patient case report with a within-subject AB design was conducted. Two patients with attention deficit after TBI were recruited for attention training. Two types of video game tasks for
This study aims to investigate whether behavioral variability and participants' self-ratings can be used to detect mind-wandering while driving and to examine their effects on braking performance during a driving task. We created a novel driving task and added a sustained attention response task (SART). We examined the effects of mind-wandering on braking performance and whether mind-wandering could be detected from SART response variability. The within-subjects results showed that self-reports
Smoking is a global health risk for premature death and disease. Recently, addictive behaviors, like smoking, were considered to be guided by explicit and implicit processes. The existence of a dissociation between the two attitudes in nonsmokers and the causes of the differences in implicit attitudes toward smoking have not been fully investigated. We investigated the explicit and implicit attitudes toward smoking via a self-reported scale and the single category implicit association test (SC-I
We numerically investigate the group delay spread (GDS) characteristics in few-mode coupled multicore fibers (FM-CMCFs) in weak random-bending conditions by using a coupled-wave theory. We qualitatively show the modal coupling between modes in the intra- and the inter-mode group generated by bending. The results indicate that the modes of FM-CMCFs are less likely to couple with each other in weak random-bending conditions in contradiction to single-mode coupled multicore fibers. To resolve this
This study focuses on the human body shadowing the propagation characteristics of local-5G frequency bands in indoor environments. We modeled an indoor propagation environment assuming a conference room containing human bodies and evaluated the propagation characteristics through a large-scale 3D numerical analysis based on the FDTD method. The electric field distribution in the conference room environment excited by the 4.7GHz transmitting antenna, which is used as the local-5G frequency, was c
This study focuses on propagation characteristics of local-5G frequency bands, including the human body shadowing in indoor environments. We modeled an indoor propagation environment assuming a small conference room containing humans and evaluated the propagation loss characteristics using a large-scale 3D numerical analysis based upon the FDTD method. The electric field distribution in the conference room is excited by a 4.7 GHz transmitting antenna, which is used as the local-5G access point,
Metacognitive impairment often occurs in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is associated with clinical problems. The aim of this study was to clarify the pathology of metacognitive impairment in TBI patients using a behavioral task, clinical assessment of self-awareness, and lesion-symptom mapping. Metacognitive abilities of TBI patients and healthy controls were assessed using a modified perceptual decision-making task. Self-awareness was assessed using the Patient Competency Ratin
