Seventeen cases of canine peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs), 11 malignant PNSTs (MPNSTs), and six benign PNSTs (BPNSTs) were examined. The prognosis in five of six dogs with BPNSTs was excellent, whereas all dogs with MPNSTs died within 2 years after the last surgical resection. One BPNST formed a recurrent mass with features of a MPNST. Histopathologically, the predominant tumor cell of MPNSTs was either spindle or round in shape with epithelioid characteristics. Other atypical cells had a
The antifungal activities of FK463 against various pathogenic fungi were tested by standard broth microdilution methods, and compared with the activities of five currently available antifungal agents; viz., fluconazole (FLCZ), itraconazole, miconazole, amphotericin B and flucytosine. Fourteen clinical isolates of Candida albicans categorized as FLCZ susceptible, FLCZ susceptible-dose dependent and FLCZ resistant were similarly susceptible to FK463 with geometric (GM) MIC values of 0.010, 0.011 a
Amyloid angiopathy with cerebral hemorrhage and senile plaques was found in the brain of aged dogs. In all 9 cases examined, 13 to 19 years old, 6 males and 3 females, amyloid deposits were observed mostly in the wall of cerebral arterioles and capillaries showed hyaline degeneration. The accumulation of amyloid fibrils measuring about 10 nm in diameter was seen in the cerebral vessel wall by electron microscopy. The cerebral hemorrhage was observed in 6 of 9 dogs and 2 of them showed massive he
Amyloid protein was isolated from the cerebral meninges of 4 aged dogs with cerebral amyloid angiopathy. By immunoblot analysis, antiserum against synthetic oligo-peptide consisting of 1-28 amino acid of amyloid beta protein recognized prominent wide band ranging from 14 to 18 kilodalton (kd). When amyloid samples were solubilized by formic acid, the antiserum recognized lower molecular weight band ranging from 3 to 4 kd. Immunohistochemical studies on cerebral amyloid angiopathy and senile plaq
Subdural histiocytic sarcomas from 15 dogs (mean age 7.8 years) were histopathologically examined. Among the 15 dogs, there was a marked breed predominance (toward Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs, 47%), but no gender predilection. Focal solitary subdural masses were detected in the cerebrum (12 cases) and spinal cord (1 case), whereas diffuse infiltrative lesions were observed in the cerebral leptomeninges in 2 cases. All neoplastic lesions had common histological features characterized by the prolife
Canine malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) occur not only in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) but also in soft tissue and various organs (non-PNS). The most important diagnostic criterion is proof of peripheral nerve sheath origin. This is difficult in non-PNS MPNSTs, and its differential diagnosis is challenging. Canine perivascular wall tumors (PWTs) also commonly arise in soft tissue. Their histopathological features are quite similar to those of canine MPNSTs, making their d
To clarify the prevalence of canine intracranial tumors in Japan, a retrospective study was performed using data on 186 canine intracranial tumors. Of 186 cases, 159 cases (85.5%) were primary and 27 cases (14.5%) were secondary intracranial tumors. Among primary intracranial tumors, meningioma (50.9%) was the most common, followed by glial tumors (21.4%) and primary intracranial histiocytic sarcoma (12.6%). These 3 tumors were most frequently found in middle-aged to elderly dogs without any sex
A 5-month-old Japanese black bull calf and twenty-seven 1-27-day-old calves exhibiting neurological signs between August and October 1998 were examined. The bull calf exhibited rapid breathing, fever, hypersensitivity, and ataxia and was euthanized 4 days after the onset of symptoms. The 27 calves primarily exhibited ataxia, and 15 had arthrogryposis. Histological examination of the bull calf revealed perivascular infiltraction by mononuclear cells, diffuse to multifocal gliosis, and neuronal ne
