Abstract Protoclusters of galaxies have been found in the last quarter-century. However, most of them have been found through the overdensity of star-forming galaxies, and there have been no known structures identified by more than two spectroscopically confirmed quiescent galaxies at z > 2.5. In this letter, we report the discovery of an overdense structure of massive quiescent galaxies with the spectroscopic redshift z = 2.77 in the COSMOS field, QO-1000. We first photometrically identify t
Abstract We present the results of a systematic study of the rest-frame optical morphology of quiescent galaxies at z ≥ 3 using the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Based on a sample selected by UVJ color or NUVUVJ color, we focus on 26 quiescent galaxies with 9.8 < log ( <mml:mr

Abstract We present a comparison of the spatial distributions of Ly α emitters (LAEs) and massive star-forming and quiescent galaxies (SFGs and QGs) at 2 < z < 4.5. We use the photometric redshift catalog to select SFGs and QGs and an LAE catalog from intermediate/narrow bands obtained from the Subaru Telescope and Isaac Newton Telescope in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). We derive the auto-/cross-correlation signals of SFGs, QGs, and LAEs and the galaxy overdensity distributions at
We report the spectroscopic confirmation of a merging pair of massive quiescent galaxies at z = 3.44. Using JWST observations, we confirm that the two galaxies lie at a projected separation of 4.5 kpc with a velocity offset of ∼680 km s −1 ( δ z ∼ 0.01). The pair resides in the core of a known rich overdensity of galaxies, dubbed the “Cosmic Vine”. For both pair members, modeling of the spectral energy distributions and faint rest-frame optical emission lines indicate high stellar masses (log( M
