Most plants do poorly when flooded. Certain rice varieties, known as deepwater rice, survive periodic flooding and consequent oxygen deficiency by activating internode growth of stems to keep above the water. Here, we identify the gibberellin biosynthesis gene, <i>SD1</i> (<i>SEMIDWARF1</i>), whose loss-of-function allele catapulted the rice Green Revolution, as being responsible for submergence-induced internode elongation. When submerged, plants carrying the deepwater rice-specific <i>SD1</i>
Deepwater rice possesses internode elongation ability to avoid drowning under deepwater conditions. Previous studies identified three QTLs regulating internode elongation ability on chromosomes 1, 3 and 12 using different populations. However, these QTLs only induce internode elongation in response to deepwater conditions from the 7-leaf stage and not during the early leaf stage. In this study, we detected two novel QTLs, qTIL2 and qTIL4 regulating deepwater response at the early leaf stage usin
Gibberellin (GA) is a plant hormone that has important roles in numerous plant developmental phases. Rice plants known as deepwater rice respond to flooding by elongating their internodes to avoid anoxia. Previous studies reported that GA is essential for internode elongation in deepwater rice. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses identified QTLs regulating internode elongation in response to deepwater conditions. However, the interaction between internode elongation and regulators of GA sens
Deepwater rice has a remarkable shoot elongation response to partial submergence. Shoot elongation to maintain air-contact enables 'snorkelling' of O2 to submerged organs. Previous research has focused on partial submergence of deepwater rice. We tested the hypothesis that leaf gas films enhance internode O2 status and stem elongation of deepwater rice when completely submerged. Diel patterns of O2 partial pressure (pO2) were measured in internodes of deepwater rice when partially or completely
<i>SNORKEL1</i> (<i>SK1</i>) and <i>SNORKEL2</i> (<i>SK2</i>) are ethylene responsive factors that regulate the internode elongation of deepwater rice in response to submergence. We previously reported that normal cultivated rice lacks <i>SK</i> genes because the Chromosome 12 region containing <i>SK</i> genes was deleted from its genome. However, no study has analyzed how the genome defect occurred in that region by comparing normal cultivated rice and deepwater rice. In this study, comparison
Rice plants that form ventilated tissues, such as aerenchyma in the leaves, stems, and roots, allow for growth in waterlogged conditions (paddy fields), but they cannot breathe and drown in flooded environments where the whole plant body is submerged. However, deepwater rice plants grown in flood-prone areas of Southeast Asia survive in prolonged flooded environments by taking in air through an elongated stem (internode) and leaves that emerge above the water surface, even if the water level is
Rice (Oryza sativa) plants have porous or hollow organs consisting of aerenchyma, which is presumed to function as a low-resistance diffusion pathway for air to travel from the foliage above the water to submerged organs. However, gas movement in rice plants has yet to be visualized in real time. In this study involving partially submerged rice plants, the leaves emerging from the water were fed nitrogen-13-labeled nitrogen ([13 N]N2 ) tracer gas, and the gas movement downw
Numerical and experimental analyses were carried out to investigate the static characteristics of liquid annular seals with helical grooves in a seal stator. In the numerical analysis, the momentum equations with turbulent coefficients and the continuity equation, which were averaged across the film thickness, were numerically solved to obtain the leakage flow rate and the pressure distributions in the seal clearance. To accurately define the location of the step between the groove and the land
Numerical and experimental analyses were carried out to investigate the dynamic characteristics of liquid annular seals with helical grooves in the seal stator. In the numerical analysis, the governing equations were the momentum equations with turbulent coefficients and the continuity equation, all averaged across the film thickness and expressed using an oblique coordinate system in which the directions of coordinate axes coincided with the circumferential direction and the direction along the
Numerical and experimental analyses of the static and dynamic characteristics of the liquid annular seals with axially partial helical grooves were conducted to investigate the effects of the axial length gal of a helically grooved section in a seal stator. The numerical solution and experimental procedures were applied in the same manner as in previous studies on through-helically grooved seals, wherein the grooves extend across the seal length. The numerical results qualitatively agreed with t
