Bifidobacterium longum KCTC 3128 and HLC 3742 were independently immobilized (entrapped) in calcium alginate beads containing 2, 3, and 4% sodium alginate. When the bifidobacteria entrapped in calcium alginate beads were exposed to simulated gastric juices and a bile salt solution, the death rate of the cells in the beads decreased proportionally with an increase in both the alginate gel concentration and bead size. The initial cell numbers in the beads affected the numbers of survivors after ex
We previously reported that ten phenylethanoid glycosides including acteoside isolated from the leaves and twigs of Callicarpa dichotoma significantly attenuated glutamate-induced neurotoxicity. In the present study, we examined anti-amnesic activity of acteoside using scopolamine-induced (1 mg/kg body weight, s.c.) amnesic mice with both passive avoidance and Morris water maze tests. Acute oral treatment (single administration prior to scopolamine treatment) of mice with acteoside (1.0, 2.5 mg/
Our study shows AA is effective against multiple models of focal ischemia, has a long therapeutic time window, and is also effective in females and hypertensive animals. AA may mediate neuroprotection by protecting mitochondria and inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase-9 induction and activation. Taken together these data suggest that AA is an excellent candidate for development as a stroke therapy.
Abstract Three new pregnane glycosides, cynatroside A ( 1 ), cynatroside B ( 2 ), and cynatroside C ( 3 ), isolated from the roots of Cynanchum atratum (Asclepiadaceae), were characterized as 7 β ‐{[ O ‐ α ‐ L ‐cymaropyranosyl‐(1→4)‐ O ‐ β ‐ D ‐digitoxopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐ β ‐ D ‐oleandropyranosyl]oxy}‐3,4,4a,4b,5,6,7,8,10,10a‐decahydro‐6 α ‐hydroxy‐4b‐ methyl‐2‐(2‐methyl‐3‐furyl)phenanthren‐1(2 H )‐one ( 1 ), 7 β ‐{[ O ‐ β ‐ D ‐cymaropyranosyl‐(1→4)‐ O ‐ α ‐ L ‐diginopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐ β ‐ D ‐cymarop
A methanolic extract of Agrimonia eupatoria (Rosaceae) significantly attenuated glutamate-induced oxidative stress in HT22 hippocampal cells. A new flavonoid, characterized as kaempferol 3-O-beta-D-(2''-O-acetyl-6''-(E)-p-coumaroyl)-glucopyranoside (2''-acetyl-tiliroside (1), was isolated from the methanolic extract of A. eupatoria stems together with nine known flavonoids. Compounds 4, 7, 8 and 9 all showed a neuroprotective effect on glutamate-induced toxicity in HT22 cells.
Licorice is a traditional botanical medicine, and has historically been commonly prescribed in Asia to treat various diseases. Glycyrrhizin (Gc), a triterpene compound, is the most abundant phytochemical constituent of licorice. However, high intake or long-term consumption of Gc has been associated with a number of side effects, including hypertension. However, the presence of alternative bioactive compounds in licorice with anti-carcinogenic effects has long been suspected. Licochalcone A (Lic
Carnosic acid is a natural benzenediol abietane diterpene found in rosemary and exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-carcinogenic activities. In this study, we evaluated the effects of carnosic acid on the metastatic characteristics of B16F10 melanoma cells. When B16F10 cells were cultured in an in vitro Transwell system, carnosic acid inhibited cell migration in a dose-dependent manner. Carnosic acid suppressed the adhesion of B16F10 cells, as well as the secretion of matrix metall
A methanolic extract of the fruits of AMOMUM TSAO-KO (Zingiberaceae) significantly attenuated nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-simulated BV2 microglia. Two new bicyclic nonanes characterized as 6,7-dihydroxy-indan-4-carbaldehyde ( 1) and 6-hydroxy-indan-4-carbaldehyde ( 2) were isolated with the eleven known compounds 6,7-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethyloct-2-enoic acid ( 3), tsaokoin ( 4), isotsaokoin ( 5), 8-oxogeraniol ( 6), P-menth-1-ene-5,6-diol ( 7), 3alpha-hydroxycarvotagenone ( 8), ts
Three new bibenzyl glycosides characterized as stilbostemin B 3'-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), stilbostemin H 3'-beta-D-glucopyranoside (2), and stilbostemin I 2"-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3) were isolated from the roots of Stemona tuberosa. All three bibenzyl glycosides significantly protected human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells from 6-hydroxydopamine-induced neurotoxicity.
