Although mast cells (MCs) often are abundant in the synovial tissues of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the contribution of MCs to joint inflammation and cartilage loss remains poorly understood. MC-restricted tryptase/heparin complexes have proinflammatory activity, and significant amounts of human tryptase beta (hTryptase-beta) are present in rheumatoid arthritis synovial fluid. Mouse MC protease-6 (mMCP-6) is the ortholog of hTryptase-beta, and this serine protease is abundant in the syno
Although the innate immune function of mast cells in the acute phase of parasitic and bacterial infections is well established, their participation in chronic immune responses to indolent infection remains incompletely understood. In parasitic infection with Trichinella spiralis, the immune response incorporates both lymphocyte and mast cell-dependent effector functions for pathogen eradication. Among the mechanistic insights still unresolved in the reaction to T. spiralis are the means by which
Based on immunomodulatory actions of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs), in vitro or preclinical studies of hUCB-MSCs have been conducted extensively in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, few human trials have investigated the outcomes of hUCB-MSC infusions. The CURE-iv trial was a phase I, uncontrolled, open label trial for RA patients with moderate disease activity despite treatment with methotrexate. The patients received a single intravenous infusion of 2.

Our findings demonstrate that the murine synovial MC population is composed of lymphocyte-independent CTMCs and identify arthritic synovium as a model system by which to gain insight into the poorly understood physiology of CTMCs in chronic inflammation.
Bone SPECT/CT is more useful than conventional bone scintigraphy in identifying sacroiliitis in early axial SpA patients, even with mild SI joint changes in plain radiography. By combining CT, we can accurately delineate the sacrum and SI joint uptake with our VOI method.
The efficacy of TAC combined with MTX was non-inferior to LEF + MTX. It had a reasonable safety profile in RA patients with moderate to severe disease activity (http://cris.nih.go.kr; KCT0000781).
This study aimed to investigate drug retention rates for various TNF inhibitors (TNFis) commonly prescribed to Korean patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in the Korean College of Rheumatology Biologics registry (KOBIO; December 2012-June 2016). Discontinuation was defined as switching or stopping the biologic agent. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox's proportional hazard models were used for further analysis. The reasons for discontinuation of TNFis were also assessed. Univariate and multivariat
A new method for separation and quantitative determination of flavone-C-glycosides in seeds of Zizyphus vulgaris var. spinosus by high performance liquid chromatography was elaborated. A reverse-phase system with a COPELL-ODS column using tetrahydrofuran in water (4:53) as a mobile phase was developed. The flavonoids were detected at 330 nm and the analysis was successfully carried out within 15 min.
Co-infection of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is not uncommon in immunocompromised hosts. Importantly, organ transplant recipients concurrently infected with HSV-1 and HCMV have a worse clinical outcome than recipients infected with a single virus. However, factors regulating the pathologic response in HSV-1, HCMV co-infected tissues are unclear. We investigated the potential biologic role of HCMV gene product immediate early 1 (IE1) protein in HSV-1-induce
Mitochondrial diseases are a group of disorders presenting mainly during infancy due to pathological dysfunction of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. We report a case of mitochondrial disease in an elderly woman complaining of generalized myalgia. A 69-year-old woman was admitted due to fatigue, general weakness, and a drowsy mental status. A brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated multifocal lesions of increased T2 signal intensity, and laboratory findings were consistent with Fa
Although several epidemiologic studies have shown the association between gout and cardiovascular outcomes, specific risk factors for developing cardiovascular diseases in Asian patients with gout are undisclosed. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate risks of cardiovascular outcomes and its related factors in Korean patients with gout. This retrospective clinical study used sampled cohort data from the National Health Insurance Service in Korea. Patients with gout were defined as s
