The COVID-19 pandemic began in December 2019 and severely influenced society. In response, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency on 7th April in seven prefectures. The study conducted an immediate survey on 8th April to record the response of the general public to the first emergency status due to epidemics. The study hypothesized that personality traits, moral foundation, and political ideology can influence people's mentality, cognition, and behavior toward COVID-19. Based on a
The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic had various influences on people’s ordinary lives, including their thoughts and behaviors related to food consumption. Food waste has been cited as a serious issue with environmental, social, and economic consequences. In this study, we investigated how the COVID-19 pandemic altered the social consciousness and behavior related to food waste in Japan. We conducted a nationwide online-based survey and collected a cross-sectional dataset from 1959 a
The scintillating grid illusion refers to the illusory perception of black spots on luminance patches at the intersections of a grey grid on a black background. We examined how spatial parameters of luminance patches modulated the strength of the illusion. In experiment 1, we controlled the size and shape of the luminance patches. For the largest-size conditions tested, we found a significant reduction in the strength of the illusion with squares when compared to circles or diamonds. In experime
Entomophagy refers to eating insects. Insect food, including cooked insects and other processed food with insect-based ingredients, is consumed in many regions of the world as a part of traditional dietary behavior, or as innovative functional food. However, many people especially in western or industrialized societies have shown negative attitudes such as resistance or disgust to entomophagy. In this study, we examined the acceptability of eating insects from the context of the behavioral immun
In the eggs illusion, small patches perceptually deform when placed at the midpoints between the intersections of a regular grid. In this study, we explored the role of orientation processing in the illusion, by manipulating some spatiotemporal stimulus parameters using three psychophysical experiments. In Experiment 1, we manipulated grid luminance and presentation duration as independent variables and found that the illusion occurred even with a brief presentation of approximately 200 to 300 m
Abstract The category of household and sanitary products is the most important category in the paper industry, because it is related to people’s daily lives all around the world. This category is seeing a rapid increase in consumption, while consumption in other categories, such as printing or writing paper, is presently declining. China is the largest manufacturer, as well as the largest consumer of household and sanitary paper. Nowadays, environmental consciousness and concerns are rising in C
Our findings demonstrate that PRO excites sleep-promoting NA (-) neurons in the VLPO, primarily through GABA_A receptors, with dopaminergic modulation occurring via D1 receptors. These results provide new insights into the neural mechanisms underlying general anesthesia and highlight the potential role of dopaminergic signaling in modulating anesthetic effects on sleep-related neural circuits.
The miniature faking effect is a perceptual phenomenon where life-sized objects and landscape in tilt-shift photographs are perceived to be miniature. Previous studies have contributed to the generation of miniature faking; these include blur (bokeh), camera angle, vantage point, and perceived distance. Although color has also been considered to be a crucial factor in inducing the miniature faking effect, research based on systematical manipulations of color attributes has not been conducted. In
In Veterinary Microbiology teaching process, the traditional teaching mode always ignores the students'autonomous learning ability and the innovation ability. In order to overcome the malpractice of the depiction teaching,it is necessary to develop the research-oriented approach. In this paper, the research-oriented approach was discussed to promote its popularization and application in Veterinary Microbiology course.
Shape-contrast effects have been introduced to the investigations into face perception with the aim of exploring face adaptation in the context of norm-based coding. Research has indicated that shape-contrast effects occur even for shapes as complex as the human face. However, whether the complexity of face stimuli alters the magnitude of shape-contrast effects needs to be examined. In this study, emoticons and realistic human faces were used with the original white circle as the test stimuli. T
The scintillating grid illusion refers to an illusory perception of black spots on the luminance increments at the intersections of gray grids on a black background. In this study, we examined how the shape of luminance increments modulated the strength of the illusion. In Experiment 1, we concurrently controlled the size and shape of luminance increments, and found significant reduction of the illusory strength on the square, compared with circle and diamond, in the largest size condition. In E
Abstract Japan’s medical education system has evolved significantly over recent decades, adapting to societal demands, an aging population, and technological advancements in healthcare. Grounded in universal health coverage, Japan’s healthcare framework emphasizes accessibility and high-quality care, necessitating a medical education system capable of producing competent and compassionate physicians. The six-year undergraduate medical program progresses through foundational sciences, clinical ex
