Kunihiko Nakai 교수의 연구실은 주로 어린이의 신경발달에 영향을 미치는 환경독소, 특히 메틸수은과 다핵반응성 유기화합물(PCBs, 농약 등)의 조기 생애 노출 영향을 중심으로 연구를 진행하고 있습니다. 일본의 높은 어류 섭취율을 배경으로 한 장기 종단적 출생대사 연구(TSCD)를 통해 태생기 및 유아기 발달에 미치는 독소의 영향을 규명하고 있으며, 특히 남성 아동에서 더 뚜렷한 민감성을 보이는 것으로 밝혀내고 있습니다. 또한 혈색소 기반 산소 운반제의 혈관 수축 작용 등 생리학적 메커니즘에 대한 기초 연구도 함께 수행하고 있습니다.

Adverse health effects following prenatal exposures to methylmercury (MeHg) have been apparent from several prospective cohort studies conducted in a fish-eating population.
