In order to control dispersion and dispersion slope of indexguiding photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), a new controlling technique of chromatic dispersion in PCF is reported. Moreover, our technique is applied to design PCF with both ultra-low dispersion and ultra-flattened dispersion in wide wavelength range. A full-vector finite element method with anisotropic perfectly matched layers is used to analyze the dispersion properties and the confinement losses in a PCF with finite number of air holes.
A full-vectorial imaginary-distance beam propagation method based on a finite element scheme is newly formulated and is effectively applied to investigating the problem of leakage due to a finite number of arrays of air holes in photonic-crystal holey fibers (HFs). In order to treat arbitrarily shaped air holes and to avoid spurious solutions, a curvilinear edge/nodal hybrid element is introduced. Furthermore, in order to evaluate propagation characteristics of not only bound modes but leaky mod
Multicore fibers (MCFs) are expected as a good candidate for overcoming the capacity limit of a current optical communication system. This paper describes the recent progress on the MCFs for space-division multiplexing to be utilized in future large capacity long-distance transmission systems. Tradeoff issue between low crosstalk and high core density in MCFs is presented and prospect of large-space multiplicity of MCFs is discussed.
Coupling characteristics of dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) couplers are evaluated by using a vector finite element method and their application to a multiplexer-demultiplexer (MUX-DEMUX) based on PCF is investigated. The PCF couplers for 1.48/1.55-m, 1.3/1.55-m, 0.98/1.55-m, and 0.85/1.55-m wavelength MUX-DEMUX are designed and the beam propagation analysis of the proposed PCF couplers is performed. It is shown from numerical results that it is possible to realize significantly shorter M
Recent progress on numerical modeling methods for photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) such as the effective index approach, basis-function expansion approach, and numerical approach is described. An index-guiding PCF with an array of air holes surrounding the silica core region has special characteristics compared with conventional single-mode fibers (SMFs). Using a full modal vector model, the fundamental characteristics of PCFs such as cutoff wavelength, confinement loss, modal birefringence, and c
A new structure of single-polarization single-mode (SPSM) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed and analyzed by using a full-vector finite element method with anisotropic perfectly matched layers. From the numerical results it is confirmed that the proposed fiber is low-loss SPSM-PCF within the wavelengths ranging from 1.48 to 1.6 μm, where only the slow-axis mode exists and the confinement loss is less than 0.1 dB/km.
In order to simply design a photonic crystal fiber (PCF), we provide numerically based empirical relations for V parameter and W parameter of PCFs only dependent on the two structural parameters - the air hole diameter and the hole pitch. We demonstrate the accuracy of these expressions by comparing the proposed empirical relations with the results of full-vector finite element method. Through the empirical relations we can easily evaluate the fundamental properties of PCFs without the need for
The wavelength dependence and the structural dependence of leakage loss and group velocity dispersion (GVD) in air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBGFs) are numerically investigated by using a full-vector finite element method. It is shown that at least seventeen rings of arrays of air holes are required in the cladding region to reduce the leakage losses to a level of 0.1 dB/km in 1.55-microm wavelength range even if using large air holes of the diameter to pitch ratio of 0.9 and that the leakag
We propose a new structure of highly nonlinear dispersion-flattened (HNDF) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with nonlinear coefficient as large as 30 W(-1)km(-1) at 1.55 microm designed by varying the diameters of the air-hole rings along the fiber radius. This innovative HNDF-PCF has a unique effective-index profile that can offer not only a large nonlinear coefficient but also flat dispersion slope and low leakage losses. It is shown through numerical results that the novel microstructured optical
The present paper describes a novel systematic solution to the problem of controlling the chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), using a structurally-simple PCF with a defected-core. By adjusting the size of the central air-hole defect we can successfully design an ultra-flattened PCF with low confinement losses, as well as small effective mode area. The design strategy is based on the mutual cancellation between the waveguide and the material dispersions of
We realized mode-division multiplexing(MDM) transmission by using orthogonal LP modes with negligible modal crosstalk, for the first time. A 2×10Gbps MDM transmission was achieved over a 10km two-mode fiber with sufficiently low power penalty.
Perfectly matched layer (PML) boundary conditions are incorporated into the full-vectorial beam propagation method (BPM) based on a finite element scheme for the three-dimensional (3-D) anisotropic optical waveguide analysis. In the present approach, edge elements based on linear-tangential and quadratic-normal vector basis functions are used for the transverse field components. To show the validity and usefulness of this approach, numerical examples are shown for Gaussian beam propagation in pr
A novel design of polarization splitter in three-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) has been proposed. The three-core PCF consists of two given identical cores with two-fold symmetry separated by a core with high birefringence. The polarization splitter is based on the phenomenon of resonant tunneling. Numerical simulations with a full vectorial beam propagation method demonstrate that it is possible to obtain a 1.9-mm-long splitter with the extinction ratio better than -20 dB and a bandwidth o
A highly birefringent air-guiding photonic crystal fiber which provides guidance by a full two-dimensional photonic bandgap (PBG) effect is proposed. The fiber core is formed by introducing a large air hole that has an area of four unit cells of the cladding materials. It is shown from computed results by a full-vector finite element method that the proposed PBG fiber has birefringence of the order of 10/sup -3/.
We study the dispersion and leakage properties for the recently reported low-loss photonic band-gap fiber by Smith et al. [Nature 424, 657 (2003)]. We find that surface modes have a significant impact on both the dispersion and leakage properties of the fundamental mode. Our dispersion results are in qualitative agreement with the dispersion profile reported recently by Ouzounov et al. [Science 301, 1702 (2003)] though our results suggest that the observed long-wavelength anomalous dispersion is
