한규만 교수의 연구실은 정신질환, 특히 우울증과 양극성장애에서 뇌 구조와 기능의 변화를 이해하기 위해 신경염증, 유전자 다형성, 에피제네틱스 및 수면 등 다양한 생물학적 요인의 영향을 탐구하고 있습니다. 특히 뇌의 염증 반응, FKBP5 유전자 변이, 히포크암프스부의 구조적 변화 등 신경과학적 기반을 기반으로 한 정신질환의 병태생리학적 메커니즘을 규명하고 있습니다. 수면 패턴과 만성 저-grade 염증 간의 상호작용 또한 중요한 연구 주제로 다루고 있습니다.

A single nucleotide polymorphism of rs1360780 in the FKBP5 gene is associated with a predisposition to developing major depressive disorder (MDD). We observed hippocampal subfield volume reductions in both MDD and BD, a finding which more prominent in MDD. The inverse correlation between BD illness duration and hippocampal subfield volume may evidence the neuroprogressive nature of BD.
Our findings indicate that WCS may be beneficial for low-grade systemic inflammation in adults, particularly among those with shorter weekday sleep durations. WCS may also interact with obesity.
