마사히데 테라즈마 교수의 연구실은 광화학 반응에서 생성되는 산화환원 중간체인 라디칼의 이동성과 그 상호작용을 초고속 시간 해상도로 연구하는 데 주력하고 있습니다. 특히 투과 격자(Transient Grating) 기법을 활용해 라디칼과 기질 분자의 번개적 확산 계수를 동시에 측정함으로써, 라디칼이 용매와 어떻게 강하게 상호작용하는지를 규명하고자 합니다. 이는 광화학 반응 메커니즘과 용액 내 분자 상호작용의 이해를 심화하는 데 기여합니다.

Diffusion coefficients (D) of various radicals created by the photoinduced hydrogen abstraction reactions from alcohols (ethanol and 2-propanol) are investigated by using the transient grating (TG) method. The translational diffusion of photochemically created intermediate radicals is measured by the transient grating technique. The diffusional behavior of these intermediates is different from that of stable molecules, which have already been investigated extensively. The investigation of the diffusion of these species will provide an opportunity to reveal the unique intermolecular interaction between the intermediates and matrix. A transient grating method for measuring the quantum yield of triplet formation (Φisc) and lifetimes of short-lived triplet states is proposed. The method is based on a measurement of time dependence of a thermal grating signal with a nanosecond pulsed laser and a cw probe laser. The validity of the method is demonstrated by determining Φisc of a number of molecules whose Φisc are known. Advantages and limitations of this method are discussed in detail.
For revealing spectrally silent dynamics in chemical reactions, a new method, the time-dependent diffusion coefficient, is presented. Principles and typical examples of this method, in particular applications to biologically related reactions, are reviewed.
