Cadenced optical imaging surveys in the next decade will be capable of detecting time-varying galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses in large numbers, increasing the size of the statistically well-defined samples of multiply imaged quasars by two orders of magnitude, and discovering the first strongly lensed supernovae. We carry out a detailed calculation of the likely yields of several planned surveys, using realistic distributions for the lens and source properties and taking magnification b
We present a strong lens analysis of SDSS J1004$+$4112, a unique quasar lens produced by a massive cluster of galaxies at $z =$ 0.68, using newly developed software for gravitational lensing. We find that our parametric mass model well reproduces all observations, including the positions of quasar images as well as those of multiply imaged galaxies with measured spectroscopic redshifts, time delays between quasar images, and the positions of faint central images. The predicted large total magnif
We study the mass distribution of a sample of 28 galaxy clusters using strong and weak lensing observations. The clusters are selected via their strong lensing properties as part of the Sloan Giant Arcs Survey (SGAS) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Mass modelling of the strong lensing information from the giant arcs is combined with weak lensing measurements from deep Subaru/Suprime-cam images to primarily obtain robust constraints on the concentration parameter and the shape of the ma
The recent discovery of fast transient events near critical curves of massive galaxy clusters, which are interpreted as highly magnified individual stars in giant arcs due to caustic crossing, opens up the possibility of using such microlensing events to constrain a range of dark matter models such as primordial black holes and scalar field dark matter. Based on a simple analytic model, we study lensing properties of a point mass lens embedded in a high magnification region, and we derive the de
The detailed observation of the distribution of redshifts and chirp masses of binary black hole (BH) mergers is expected to provide a clue to their origin. In this paper, we develop a hybrid model of the probability distribution function of gravitational lensing magnification taking account of both strong and weak gravitational lensing, and use it to study the effect of gravitational lensing magnification on the distribution of gravitational waves from distant binary BH mergers detected in ongoi
We present a new algorithm, CAMIRA, to identify clusters of galaxies in wide-field imaging survey data. We base our algorithm on the stellar population synthesis model to predict colours of red sequence galaxies at a given redshift for an arbitrary set of bandpass filters, with additional calibration using a sample of spectroscopic galaxies to improve the accuracy of the model prediction. We run the algorithm on 11 960 deg 2 of imaging data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8
We develop a new method of combining cluster observables (number counts and cluster-cluster correlation functions) and stacked weak lensing signals of background galaxy shapes, both of which are available in a wide-field optical imaging survey. Assuming that the clusters have secure redshift estimates, we show that the joint experiment enables a self-calibration of important systematic errors inherent in these measurements, including the source redshift uncertainty and the cluster mass-observabl
Recent rapid progress in time domain surveys makes it possible to detect various types of explosive transients in the Universe in large numbers, some of which will be gravitationally lensed into multiple images. Although a large number of strongly lensed distant galaxies and quasars have already been discovered, strong lensing of explosive transients opens up new applications, including improved measurements of cosmological parameters, powerful probes of small scale structure of the Universe, an
We present an algorithm for selecting an uniform sample of gravitationally lensed quasar candidates from low-redshift (0.6<z<2.2) quasars brighter than i=19.1 that have been spectroscopically identified in the SDSS. Our algorithm uses morphological and color selections that are intended to identify small- and large-separation lenses, respectively. Our selection algorithm only relies on parameters that the SDSS standard image processing pipeline generates, allowing easy and fast selection of lens
The steep mass profile of A1689 derived from recent detailed lensing observations is not readily reconciled with the low concentration halos predicted by the standard CDM model. However, halo triaxiality may act to bias the profile constraints derived assuming a spherically symmetric mass distribution, since lensing relates only to the projected mass distribution. A degree of halo triaxiality is inherent to the CDM structure formation, arising from the collision-less nature of the dark matter. H
We present new measurements of dark matter distributions in 25 X-ray luminous clusters by making a full use of the two-dimensional (2D) weak-lensing signals obtained from high-quality Subaru/Suprime-Cam imaging data. Our approach to directly compare the measured lensing shear pattern with elliptical model predictions allows us to extract new information on the mass distributions of individual clusters, such as the halo ellipticity and mass centroid. We find that these parameters on the cluster s
We derive the average mass profile of elliptical galaxies from the ensemble of 161 strong gravitational lens systems selected from several surveys, assuming that the mass profile scales with the stellar mass and effective radius of each lensing galaxy. The total mass profile is well fitted by a power-law \rho(r) \propto r^\gamma with best-fit slope \gamma = -2.11+/-0.05. The decomposition of the total mass profile into stellar and dark matter distributions is difficult due to a fundamental degen
Gravitational waves from inspiraling compact binaries are known to be an excellent absolute distance indicator, yet it is unclear whether electromagnetic counterparts of these events are securely identified for measuring their redshifts, especially in the case of black hole--black hole mergers such as the one recently observed with the Advanced LIGO. We propose to use the cross-correlation between spatial distributions of gravitational wave sources and galaxies with known redshifts as an alterna
We study the recently discovered gravitational lens SDSS J1004+4112, the first quasar lensed by a cluster of galaxies. It consists of four images with a maximum separation of 14.62''. The system has been confirmed as a lensed quasar at z=1.734 on the basis of deep imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations. We present color-magnitude relations for galaxies near the lens plus spectroscopy of three central cluster members, which unambiguously confirm that a cluster at z=0.68 is responsible f
We derive radial mass profiles of four strong lensing selected clusters which show prominent giant arcs (Abell 1703, SDSS J1446+3032, SDSS J1531+3414, and SDSS J2111-0115), by combining detailed strong lens modeling with weak lensing shear measured from deep Subaru Suprime-cam images. Weak lensing signals are detected at high significance for all four clusters, whose redshifts range from z=0.28 to 0.64. We demonstrate that adding strong lensing information with known arc redshifts significantly
