Abstract. Regional land carbon budgets provide insights into the spatial distribution of the land uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide and can be used to evaluate carbon cycle models and to define baselines for land-based additional mitigation efforts. The scientific community has been involved in providing observation-based estimates of regional carbon budgets either by downscaling atmospheric CO2 observations into surface fluxes with atmospheric inversions, by using inventories of carbon stock
Robust estimates of CO2 budget, CO2 exchanged between the atmosphere and terrestrial biosphere, are necessary to better understand the role of the terrestrial biosphere in mitigating anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Over the past decade, this field of research has advanced through understanding of the differences and similarities of two fundamentally different approaches: "top-down" atmospheric inversions and "bottom-up" biosphere models. Since the first studies were
Abstract. Global and regional sources and sinks of carbon across the earth's surface have been studied extensively using atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) observations and atmospheric chemistry-transport model (ACTM) simulations (top-down/inversion method). However, the uncertainties in the regional flux distributions remain unconstrained due to the lack of high-quality measurements, uncertainties in model simulations, and representation of data and flux errors in the inversion systems. Here, we
Abstract We examined the consistency between terrestrial biosphere fluxes (terrestrial CO 2 exchanges) from data‐driven top‐down (GOSAT CO 2 inversion) and bottom‐up (empirical eddy flux upscaling based on a support vector regression (SVR) model) approaches over 42 global terrestrial regions from June 2009 to October 2011. Seasonal variations of the biosphere fluxes by the two approaches agreed well in boreal and temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere. Both fluxes also exhibited strong
Creep rupture strength at 923 K and microstructural evolution of welded joints have been investigated for high boron–low nitrogen–9Cr heat resistant steels developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (Japan). Welded joints were prepared from plates containing 47–180 ppm boron using gas tungsten arc welding and Inconel type filler metal, and showed superior creep properties to those of welded joints of conventional high chromium steels such as P92 and P122. No type IV failure was ob
Abstract The increasing strength of land CO 2 uptake in the 2000s has been attributed to a stimulating effect of rising atmospheric CO 2 on photosynthesis (CO 2 fertilization). Using terrestrial biosphere models, we show that enhanced CO 2 uptake is induced not only by CO 2 fertilization but also an increasing uptake by plant regrowth (accounting for 0.33 ± 0.10 Pg C/year increase of CO 2 uptake in the 2000s compared with the 1960s–1990s) with its effect most pronounced in eastern North America,
Forest ecosystems sequester large amounts of atmospheric CO2, and the contribution from forests in Asia is not negligible. Previous syntheses of carbon fluxes in Asian ecosystems mainly employed estimates of eddy covariance measurements, net ecosystem production (NEP), gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (RE); however, to understand the variability within carbon cycles, fluxes such as autotropic respiration (AR), net primary production (NPP), litterfall, heterotrophic respi
An integrated understanding of the biogeochemical consequences of climate extremes and land use changes is needed to constrain land-surface feedbacks to atmospheric CO2 from associated climate change. Past assessments of the global carbon balance have shown particularly high uncertainty in Southeast Asia. Here, we use a combination of model ensembles to show that intensified land use change made Southeast Asia a strong source of CO2 from the 1980s to 1990s, whereas the regi
Abstract Southeast Asia is a region known for active land‐use changes (LUC) over the past 60 years; yet, how trends in net CO 2 uptake and release resulting from LUC activities (net LUC flux) have changed through past decades remains uncertain. The level of uncertainty in net LUC flux from process‐based models is so high that it cannot be concluded that newer estimates are necessarily more reliable than older ones. Here, we examined net LUC flux estimates of Southeast Asia for the 1980s−2010s fr
Abstract The process of confining unnecessary freedom is a step toward advanced ecosystem modeling. This study demonstrates the importance of carbon flux and biometric observation in constraining a terrestrial ecosystem model with a simple optimization scheme. At the selected sites from AsiaFlux network, a simultaneous optimization scheme for both carbon flux and biomass was compared with carbon flux‐oriented and biomass‐oriented optimization schemes using the Biome‐BGC model. The optimization s
The present study investigated whether room temperature (T(a)) cycles around dusk and dawn could influence the circadian rhythm of rectal temperature (T(core)), urinary 6-hydroxymelatonin sulfate during nocturnal sleep, and subjective assessments of sleep in humans. Six female and two male students served as participants. Two different T(a) conditions, cyclic and constant, were established. Two kinds of room temperature were provided to subjects: cyclic T(a) (gradual decrease from 27 degrees C t
This study aimed at elucidating the physiological significance of dusk and dawn in the circadian rhythm of core temperature (T(core)) and urinary 6-hydroxymelatonin sulfate in humans during sleep and the waking sensation just after rising. Seven female and four male students served as participants. Participants retired at 2300 h and rose at 0700 h. They were requested to sit on a chair and spend time as quietly as possible during wakefulness, reading a book or listening to recorded light music.
