Melanocytic nevi are a benign clonal proliferation of cells expressing the melanocytic phenotype, with heterogeneous clinical and molecular characteristics. In this review, we discuss the genetics of nevi by salient nevi subtypes: congenital melanocytic nevi, acquired melanocytic nevi, blue nevi, and Spitz nevi. While the molecular etiology of nevi has been less thoroughly studied than melanoma, it is clear that nevi and melanoma share common driver mutations. Acquired melanocytic nevi harbor on
Possible causative factors of infraorbital dark circles include excessive pigmentation, thin and translucent lower eyelid skin overlying the orbicularis oculi muscle, and shadowing due to skin laxity and tear trough, but because multiple factors cause infraorbital dark circles in the majority of patients, it is essential to identify the cause and choose the appropriate treatment according to the cause.
Enlarged pore sizes are associated with increased sebum output level, age and male sex. In female patients, additional hormonal factors, such as those of the menstrual cycle, affect the pore size.
In Korean melanoma patients, thickness and advanced stages are significant factors for poorer prognosis. However, the location of melanoma did not have a significant prognostic value. In treating the melanomas in acral location, local wide excisions resulted in a similar prognosis compared to amputations.
Autologous fat transplantation is an effective method for the treatment of infraorbital dark circles due to thin and translucent lower eyelid skin overlying the orbicularis oculi muscle.
The published findings on gender disparities in melanoma have yielded many advances in our understanding of this disease. Biological, environmental, and behavioral factors may explain the observed gender difference in melanoma incidence and outcome. Further research will enable us to learn more about melanoma pathogenesis, with the goal of offering better treatments and preventative advice to our patients.
Autologous fat transplantation is an effective method for long-term correction of depressed atrophic scars left by linear scleroderma on the forehead but is less effective for corrections on the nose, infraorbital area, and chin.
Treatment of primary and recurrent DFSP by MMS results in a low recurrence rate with possible benefits of smaller defects compared with wide local excision. This study provides further support for MMS as the treatment of choice for DFSP.
Acral melanoma commonly occurs in areas that are not exposed to much sunlight, such as the sole of the foot. Little is known about risk factors and mutational processes of plantar acral melanoma. Nuclear envelope rupture during interphase contributes to genome instability in cancer. Here, we show that the nuclear and micronuclear membranes of melanoma cells are frequently ruptured by macroscopic mechanical stress on the plantar surface due to weight-bearing activities. The marginal region of pla
Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) is the reverse transcriptase component of the telomeric complex, which synthesizes terminal DNA to protect chromosomal ends and to maintain genomic integrity. In melanoma, mutation in TERT promoter region is a common event and theses promoter variants have been shown to be associated with increased gene expression, decreased telomere length and poorer outcome. In this study, we determined the frequency of TERT promoter mutation in 88 Korean p
Treatment with a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser is an effective method for reducing pore size and sebum level.
Frozen MMS, which has the advantages of shorter surgery time and immediate closure, is as effective as paraffin MMS in the treatment of DFSP.
Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy is an unusual form of leukocytoclastic vasculitis occuring in children from the age 4 months to 2 years. The etiology remains unknown. Numerous studies, however, suggest acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy as an immune-mediated vasculitis in response to a variety of antigenic stimuli. We report a case of an acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy; 11-month-old boy with a history of fever for 3 days and a history of purpuric rash on the extremities, trunk, buttock and
