In this case series study, inapparent infections in children may have been associated with silent COVID-19 transmission in the community. Heightened surveillance using laboratory screening will allow detection in children with unrecognized SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Along with positive SARS-CoV-2 RNA in nasopharyngeal swabs, viral RNA was detectable at high concentration for >3 weeks in fecal samples from 12 mildly symptomatic and asymptomatic children with COVID-19 in Seoul, South Korea. Saliva also tested positive during the early phase of infection. If proven infectious, feces and saliva could serve as transmission sources.
We report changes in viral load over time in a 27-day-old neonate with coronavirus disease 2019 who presented with fever, cough, and vomiting. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 RNA was detected in the nasopharynx, oropharynx, stool, saliva, plasma, and urine. The highest viral RNA copies in nasopharynx decreased over time while viral load in stool remained high.
These results collectively present the humoral immune responses during SARS-CoV-2 infection in children. A further longitudinal study is needed to thoroughly understand the immune system and for effective vaccine development in children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The clinical manifestations of M. pneumoniae pneumonia in young children are milder than those in older children. A high prevalence of co-detected respiratory virus in young children suggests that virus might play a role in making pneumonia clinically apparent in this age group.
This study aimed to determine the mechanism of resistance to piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP) in Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream isolates that are susceptible to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs). Antibiotic susceptibility was determined for K. pneumoniae isolated from children with bacteremia. The β-lactamase genes were detected using a large-scale bla detection method (LARGE-SCALEblaFinder) and confirmed by sequencing analysis. The isolates were furt
This study investigated the roles of β-lactamase and penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP3) alterations in the development of recent antimicrobial resistance in nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) isolated from Korean children. Nasopharyngeal NTHi isolates from children at a tertiary children's hospital were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility using E-test. β-lactamase production was screened by the paper disc test, and polymerase chain reaction amplification of blaTEM<
Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) and serpentine fibula-polycystic kidney syndrome (SFPKS) share many similarities, including craniofacial abnormalities, bony deformities, and renal involvement. Because mutations in exon 34 of NOTCH2 have been identified recently in both HCS and SFPKS patients, it has been suggested that these two syndromes be classed as the same disorder. A 3-year-old boy presented with polycystic kidneys and club feet detected during the fetal period; however, acroosteolysis and cur
This study was conducted to identify risk factors for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and demonstrate the spectrum of CMV disease in children receiving anticancer chemotherapy without hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). A total of 289 children who received chemotherapy and were tested for CMV infection were included in the study. CMV antigenemia and DNAemia were determined by identifying the pp65 antigen in leukocytes and performing real-time PCR. CMV disease was diagnosed by tissue
Enlarged NT measurement is a poor predictor of genetic abnormalities not identified by gwNIPT. When applied, the fixed NT cut-off of 3.5 mm provides a low FPR with a similar DR to lower cut-off thresholds, resulting in a higher PPV.
Children with retinoblastoma can experience significant morbidity and even mortality from CMV infection during chemotherapy in Korea. Preemptive screening and appropriate antiviral therapy can reduce the development of CMV disease and subsequent mortality.
