The ability to prepare solid surfaces with well-controlled superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties is of paramount importance to water-oil separation technology. Herein, we successfully prepared superhydrophobic-superoleophilic membranes by single-step deposition of polystyrene (PS) nanofibers onto a stainless steel mesh via electrospinning. The contact angles of diesel and water on the prepared PS nanofiber membrane were 0° and 155° ± 3°, respectively. Applications of the PS nanofiber m
Dual emulsion electrospinning is introduced to form core–shell nanofiber coatings with the self-healing agent dimethyl siloxane (DMS) and dimethyl-methyl hydrogen-siloxane (cure) separately in the cores. The coating pores are also intercalated by polymerized (cured) poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) resin as an outer matrix. If such a coating is damaged, the self-healing agents (DMS resin and cure) are released separately from the nanofiber cores and are mixed. As a result, the mixture of DMS and c
Self-healing microfibers with core-shell geometry were studied. A commercial binary epoxy was encased in solution-blown polymer nano-/microfibers in the 0.2-2.6 μm diameter range. The core-shell microfibers were formed by coaxial nozzles, which encapsulated the epoxy resin and its hardener in separate cores. Solution blowing, the fiber-forming process used in this work, was at least 30 times faster than the electrospinning method used previously and has already been scaled up to the industrial l
In this work, we developed novel self-healing anticorrosive hierarchical coatings that consist of several components. Namely, as a skeleton we prepared a core-shell nanofiber mat electrospun from emulsions of cure material (dimethyl methylhydrogen siloxane) in a poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) solution in dimethylformamide. In these nanofibers, cure is in the core, while PAN is in the shell. The skeleton deposited on a protected surface is encased in an epoxy-based matrix, which contains emulsified li
The present work contains the results of the experiments with two tiny drops on partially wettable substrates with contact angles of 10°, 24°, 27°, and 56°, which coalesce in the regime entirely dominated by viscous forces. Both side and bottom views are examined. The results for these three-dimensional coalescence flows are compared with scaling laws and the numerical two-dimensional model developed in the present work.
The present work aims at development of self-healing materials capable of partially restoring their mechanical properties under the conditions of prolonged periodic loading and unloading, which is characteristic, for example, of aerospace applications. Composite materials used in these and many other applications frequently reveal multiple defects stemming from their original inhomogeneity, which facilitates microcracking and delamination at ply interfaces. Self-healing nanofiber mats may effect
The capacity for core-shell nanofiber mats containing healing agents (resin monomer and cure) in their cores to adhere to a substrate was studied using blister testing. After extended periodic bending, the adhesion energy was measured, and the effect of self-healing on the composite's delamination from the substrate was considered. In addition, the cohesion of two layers of the self-healing nanofibers was examined using blister testing and compared to that of ordinary nanofiber mats. The damage
Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites are widely employed in lightweight and high performance applications including supercars, aero-vehicles, and space components. However, although carbon fibers are thermally stable, the low thermal endurance of the matrix materials remains a critical problem in terms of the performance of the material. In this study, we proposed a new, Al2O3-based thermal barrier coating (TBC) for the CFRP composites. The TBC comprised α-phase Al2O3 particles with
Electrospinning is a simple and highly versatile method for the large-scale fabrication of polymeric nanofibers. Additives or fillers can also be used to functionalize the nanofibers for use in specific applications. Herein, we demonstrate a novel and efficient way to fabricate superhydrophobic to hydrophilic tunable mats with the combined use of electrospinning and electrospraying that may be suitable for mass production on the merits of rapid deposition. The tunable nanocomposite mats were com
Dynamic electrowetting-on-dielectric (DEWOD) of the unstretched and stretched Teflon is reported in the experiments with water drop impact and rebound. We explore experimentally and theoretically the situation with the capacitance different from the standard static electrowetting. Deionized water drops impact onto either an unstretched hydrophobic Teflon surface or Teflon stretched up to 250% strain normally to the impact direction. The surface roughness of the unstretched Teflon increased after
Here, we studied the self-healing of composite materials filled with epoxy-containing nanofibers. An initial incision in the middle of a composite sample stretched in a static fatigue test can result in either crack propagation or healing. In this study, crack evolution was observed in real time. A binary epoxy, which acted as a self-healing agent, was encapsulated in two separate types of interwoven nano/microfibers formed by dual-solution blowing, with the core containing either epoxy or harde
