Organic crystals with second-order optical nonlinearity feature very high and ultra-fast optical nonlinearities and are therefore attractive for various photonics applications. During the last decade, they have been found particularly attractive for terahertz (THz) photonics. This is mainly due to the very intense and ultra-broadband THz-wave generation possible with these crystals. We review recent progress and challenges in the development of organic crystalline materials for THz-wave generati
Abstract Organic π‐conjugated crystals with second‐order optical nonlinearity are considerably attractive materials for diverse terahertz (THz) wave photonics. An overview of the research of organic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals for THz wave generation, detection, and applications is provided here. First, the status of organic NLO crystals compared to other alternative THz materials is described. Second, the basic theory and requirements for organic THz generators and detectors are explained.
During the past decade, various new types of organic nonlinear optical crystals have been developed to overcome the benchmark stilbazolium DAST (4-(4-(N,N-dimethylamino)styryl)-1-methylpyridinium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate) crystal. Here, we review the acentric core structures used in recently developed organic nonlinear optical crystals exhibiting high macroscopic second-order optical nonlinearity, along with their supramolecular interactions and THz applications. The nonlinear optical acentric c
We investigate physical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal transmission gratings which influence the light diffraction efficiency behavior. Scanning electron microscopy is used to determine the orientation and shape of nanometer-sized liquid crystal droplets in a polymer host. Dependence of diffraction efficiency on light polarization suggests that the orientation of a liquid crystal within the ellipsoidal droplets is axial. The distribution of droplet orientations appears to vary fo
A significant improvement of the ring-cavity self-pumped phase conjugation response time in the near-infrared cw regime with a photorefractive brown Sn2P2S6 crystal is reported. Brown Sn2P2S6 is grown by the vapor-transport technique with SnI2 as the transport agent. With our Sn2P2S6 samples response times below 50 ms and phase-conjugate reflectivities of 25% can be achieved at a wavelength of 780 nm with a moderate light intensity of 1 W/cm2. We show that the measured reflectivity represents th
The photorefractive properties of Sn2P2S6 crystals in the wavelength range from 633to1064 nm are investigated. Conventional yellow and modified brown crystals with a variation of nonstoichiometric defects are examined. Brown crystals respond much faster and exhibit substantially higher photorefractive gain than yellow crystals, up to 18 cm−1 at 780 nm and 8.5 cm−1 at 1064 nm. Ring-cavity self-pumped phase conjugation is demonstrated using both types of crystal. The phase-conjugate response of br
