NIHL, in principle, can be prevented. With the current pace of development, oral drugs to protect against NIHL should be available within the next 5-10 years. Positive results from ongoing trials combined with additional laboratory tests might accelerate the time from the bench to clinical treatment.
Here we study links between aminoglycoside-induced mistranslation, protein misfolding and neuropathy. We demonstrate that aminoglycosides induce misreading in mammalian cells and assess endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and unfolded protein response (UPR) pathways. Genome-wide transcriptome and proteome analyses revealed upregulation of genes related to protein folding and degradation. Quantitative PCR confirmed induction of UPR markers including C/EBP homologous protein, glucose-regulated prote
The THI scores may be influenced by depressive symptoms, state anxiety, and pure tone thresholds in Japan.
Clinical features of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) associated with vestibular schwannoma (VS) are not fully understood. Determining a treatment plan and explaining it to patients requires clinicians to clearly understand the clinical features related to the tumor, including SSNHL. To identify the full range of clinical features of VS-associated SSNHL, especially recovery of hearing following multiple episodes of SSNHL and what factors predict recovery and recurrence. A multicenter re
We evaluated the effects of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, paroxetine, on treating tinnitus.Tinnitus patients stratified for the presence of depression and anxiety were studied retrospectively. Fifty-six patients were observed for more than 6 months. They were initially treated with paroxetine only at a dose of 10 mg/day for 2-4 weeks; thereafter, the dose was increased to 20 mg/day. Tinnitus distress was evaluated with the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and with visual analog scal
Objective: Quality of life (QoL) and subjective symptoms are predominantly used to evaluate treatment outcome of patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS). However, for patients undergoing conservative treatment-the most frequently used intervention-the association between QoL and subjective symptoms is unclear. Moreover, it is unknown whether VS-related tinnitus could be associated with the audiological and psychological status of the patient. Our overall aim is to provide objective evide
Sleep disorders in patients with tinnitus improved after tinnitus treatments. Complex interactions between depressive symptoms and anxiety may occur in these patients. The improvement in sleep disorders at follow-up was correlated with improvements in tinnitus severity and state anxiety.
About half of the cases in our study developed high- or pan-frequency hearing loss within 10 years of onset of low-frequency hearing loss. The initial therapy results and fluctuation of hearing during the first year may indicate the long-term prognosis of patients presenting with low-frequency hearing loss.
There are no established indications for facial nerve schwannoma treatment, including surgery, radiation and follow-up observation, and it is difficult to determine treatment policy uniformly. The treatment policy was examined from each treatment course. Data of patients with facial nerve schwannomas at our hospital from 1987 to 2018 were retrospectively examined. Their age, sex, clinical symptoms, tumor localization, treatment policies and outcomes were reviewed. In total, 22 patients underwent
