최 교수의 연구실은 코로나19 및 중동호흡기증후군(MERS)과 같은 메르스·코로나바이러스 감염에 의한 면역 반응, 특히 항체의 동태와 지속성을 중심으로 연구를 진행하고 있습니다. 특히 감염 후 항체 반응의 감쇠 경향, 무증상 및 경증 환자에서의 혈액 검사 결과 해석의 유용성에 중점을 두고 있으며, 임상적 진단과 백신 개발에 기여할 수 있는 면역학적 데이터를 확보하고자 합니다. 연구는 임상 환자군을 대상으로 한 장기적 추적 관찰과 면역검사 기반 분석을 융합하여 진행됩니다.

We investigated the kinetics of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) neutralizing and spike protein antibody titers over the course of 1 year in 11 patients who were confirmed by reverse transcription PCR to have been infected during the outbreak in South Korea in 2015. Robust antibody responses were detected in all survivors who had severe disease; responses remained detectable, albeit with some waning, for <1 year. We investigated the kinetics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 neutralizing antibodies in 7 asymptomatic persons and 11 patients with pneumonia. The geometric mean titer of neutralizing antibodies declined from 219.4 at 2 months to 143.7 at 5 months after infection, indicating a waning antibody response.
Waning humoral immunity in coronavirus disease patients has raised concern over usefulness of serologic testing. We investigated antibody responses of 58 persons 8 months after asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. For 3 of 4 immunoassays used, seropositivity rates were high (69.0%-91.4%).
We compared levels of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 neutralizing antibodies in recovery plasma from 7 completely asymptomatic coronavirus disease patients with those in symptomatic patients in South Korea. We found that serologic diagnostic testing was positive for 71% (5/7) of completely asymptomatic patients, but neutralizing antibody response occurred in all 7 patients.
